Interesting gamasutra article about AI
« on: February 06, 2009, 06:29:37 pm »

The problem being discussed here, AI in a "sandbox" open-world environment, seems very relevant to DF.

It certainly would be interesting to see some of the AI priorities represented in a data-driven way.

Interesting...though the AI it covers is only tactical, 'what do I do in this situation with that guy there and that thing here'.  There's no higher level thinking or any concept of goals...just 'My code says I should do this.  To do this, I can do that and the other thing, and I'll pick one randomly, and if something else I needs to do something else, I'll either interrupt or not'.

Crysis is a good example of why modern games should pee their panties in comparison to Dwarf Fortress, along with other sandbox style First Person Shooters. They're constantly hailed for what they are capable of, and yet, the AI can barely pass for a cat walking on a keyboard.

At present, the Dwarf Fortress AI is superior, and is as good as it needs to be. Sure, it could be better, but it's hard to compare it to mainstream games.

Um. I hate to tell you this... but Toady himself has been known to mock the AIs driving our beloved dwarves. Yeah, they can do some pretty amazing things in aggregate but that is mostly an emergent property rather than any glorious piece of individual AI. Dwarves are about as intelligent as the rocks they live under.

And now the thread is about starfish porn.
...originally read that as 'perpetual motion pants' and thought how could I have missed this??

Yeah. The AI is okay in DF right now, but it could be lot better, and it will be lot better. Hopefully Toady will be able to code in a decent siege AI [army arc] + combat AI [combat arc]. If those will be good enough, all we need is a good "overland"/strategical&tactical AI + dwarven AI tweaks. [pathfinding, job related problems etc.]  :)

hmmpf dont forget an nice "every day" AI for the more peacefull stuff and interpersonal relationships.

Talk to people could be made more informativ and interresting especally cause we already have more fleshed out personalities then in most other games.

Hmph, don't forget to add a nice "every day" AI for the more peaceful stuff and interpersonal relationships.

Conversations with people could be made more informative and interesting especially because we already have more fleshed out personalities than in most of other games.

Fix'd.

Btw Woose you missed some very serious grammar fails. Practice your Grammar-Nazi'ing.
I don't even use English in my everyday life!

Sometimes Emergent AI is the best kind. Our favorite ant-farm-with-beard can do some amazing things from a very simple rule set. Each Dwarf can, individually, be dumb, but together they can build a mighty fortress of goblin doom!
