legendary armorer
« on: February 06, 2009, 12:53:05 pm »

so i finally got a legendary armorsmith after turning almost the entire population of my fort into novice armorers.  He went fey and made a legendary steel buckler! woot!  that'll go well with the legendary steel warhammer a possessed dwarf made a while ago.

I'm currently in the process of getting all of my dwarves to be fully decked out in masterwork plate (plus chainmail and steel cap).

what i've been doing is locking my military into a room w/ only chainmail and caps, setting them to wear Plt, letting them pick up the chain and steel cap, then unlocking an adjacent room with everything else, so they can stack the steel plate over the chainmail and helm over cap.

i have a couple questions though; are there any faster ways of doing this? it's pretty micro intensive with the stockpiles and all that.  also, how exactly does armor stacking work to reduce damage?  what does the block rating of various armors (available on the wiki) actually do to incoming damage?

Just set them to wear leather, wait until they're fully decked in that, then set them to chain, wait again, and finally plate.

Armor can stack.

err, i know armor can stack, as posted.  i was asking what the practical benefits were.

also, i have had some experience switching from chain > plate, and i have noticed that sometimes dwarfs will continue to wear chain leggings without replacing them with greaves... that's why i started using my method.  also, it seems the only thing they can fit under full steel plate is a cap and a chain shirt.

as far as leather goes, i'm not going to bother with leather, but i would be interested in discovering what, if anything, can stack over leather armor.
btw, everyone in my fort who is military is going to be wearing full plate with chain, whether they are hunting, using crossbows, or using battleaxes.  part of the reason is that i am using orc mod and those orcs are pretty beastly up close.

The practical benefits is that they're wearing more armor. That's why you stack leather + chain + plate, and the leather is the easiest of the lot to get skilled up and produced, provided you have ample cats.

It's a simple more==takes less damage situation. And Boksi has the right formula - much easier to deal with.

Leather for Hunters/Chasers (Poorly trained dwarves with spears to chase enemies down/Meatsheilds)
That's harsh...at least Meat Puppets in Psi-Ops had proper armour

Too bad for them it didn't help against psychic attacks :D

There are three things I know about dwarves:
1. They've got beards. Even the women.
2. They're short. Especially the women.
3. They're Scottish.

Who even needs cats? I usually get enough leather from human and dwarf traders early on and for so cheap that I can churn out a few thousand sets of leather armor and caps with ease. A bin is so ridiculously cheap that I can make a killing off of imported leather worked into armor.

this is verified?  you're talking to me like i'm an idiot.  can you tell me exactly how the armor mechanism works?

He's not talking to you like you're an idiot...though to be honest my opinion on your intelligence isn't that great, following what I've seen in this thread. What has already been explained quite clearly to you is pretty much all you're going to get. If you want exact numbers and functions, you'd have to deal with the Toad. Anything we know you can probably work out for yourself (eventually ::)) by examining the raws. The more layers a dwarf has on, the more protection or [BLOCKPOWER] they have (though if you actually look in the raws, you'd find that body armour has [MAINBLOCK] and [SECONDBLOCK] rather than the [BLOCKPOWER] that's used for other items)

Yes, it's verified. Dwarves will wear leather + chain + plate and get the cumulative benefits of all three layers. It's debatable whether this is a bug or a feature, but that's how it works in 40d and in every version I can recall. Certainly since the z-level was introduced when fortresses calmed down enough for me to pay attention to such things.

I'm not sure its worth the micromanagement however. Skill matters vastly more than equipment. A legendary dwarf with leather armor will be far more durable than a novice dwarf with masterwork adamantine plate.

Yes, but a legendary dwarf with leather, chain, and masterwork adamantine plate will be far more durable than both combined.

And there really isn't much micromanagement. When you recruit someone for permanent inclusion in the military, set them to leather and start them training their first skill. When they hit elite, switch them to chain as they should be all leathered up by then. When they hit champion switch them to plate. So long as you've made everything, that's pretty much all there is to it.
