Tamed crocs becomming hostile?
« on: February 05, 2009, 01:02:20 am »

I tamed several cave crocodiles, after being very careful to make sure they never got to engage my dwarfs/animals in combat (one did, was gotten rid of).  For the first few years, all was well.  They had offspring, all was still well.  Then, at some point later, several (but not all) of them turned hostile.

They still show up as "tame cave crocodile...", but are labeled as "hostile" on the unit list, and I can no longer cage or butcher them, nor can I seem to attack them.

Could this be related to (or a manifestation of) the known bug re: caravans/visitors to your fortress engaging in combat with tamed feature creatures?

Same happened to my crocs, repeatedly. You can take them out with weapon traps.

Same happened to my single crock, I killed all the others before I managed to get a breeding pair, there was much sorrow...

It was attached to a restraint and didn't seem to attack anyone though, nor did my military seem to attack it... I build a cage trap next to it, caught it, and transferred it to a restraint in a moat...

I haven't flooded the moat yet, but it should be fine if I do, right?

It is still hostile by the way...

I discovered a few things (mostly from helpful feedback + a little experimentation) before my fort met it's demise, may be helpful to anyone else who has this problem:

(1) Though they're hostile, they're not hostile to your dorfs, only outsiders.
(2) Their offspring show up as tame, so you can still use them as breeders.  (But note (1), and keep them away from liasons.)
(3) Traps work, cages or whatever else.

I think even after trapping it, it was still in the half tame / half hostile state.

On my current fort, it's finally warm enough that the elves don't just bring cages and cages of corpses.  I have a huge number of neat animals, but not a single breeding pair.  I've got crocs, giant eagles, big cats, and more types of primate than I have actual dorfs, but not a single pair that can breed.

I think I need to build a giant, underground, dwarven (okay, that makes the first two superfluous) ark.

I've heard of several players having crocs go from benign pets to xenophobic murderers. While I haven't experienced it myself, it seems like this is a recurring glitch of some sort.

Maybe, though it should add an exciting new element to washing elves into your moat...
