Or a bandit, or an ex-retainer or any other type of unemployed samurai.

This one.  It's a Samurai without a lord to serve.  Shogun has nothing to do with it.  The Shogun is just the lord who's managed to get the other lords to accept them as the strongest.

And keep in mind that the job of being a samurai is defined by its loyalty.  Being a samurai is kind of like being a Secret Service agent.  If the guy who're working for bites it, and everything falls apart without...well, you still have your training, but you're not quite the same thing anymore, are you?

Most Ronin were considered dishonorable as they had not commited suicide when their master died, hence it being a low ranking.

Also try holding down left + right, its a weird move that seems useless.

its equally fast to swing very quickly from the neutral position(let go for a split second, then swing the opposite way)

I'm not sure what the Hagakure is, but that isn't a literal statement since you're only a ronin if you used to be a Samurai and lost your lord.

Not that useless, actually useful in higher levels.  That's a neutral stance that takes less time to strike left or right from it.  So if you expect attacks from either direction and need to respond instantly...

Sadly, I will never get past 60 in my lifetime. I will probably never use the neutral move unless I'm "dancing". (more fun than in Mario)

my suspicions about those inbetween frames might be confirmed: the hold left right postion can block!

makes me wonder if that works inbetween swings for that position all the time, as well as the other inbetween frame
