Thief has stole--oh, shut up already
« on: February 03, 2009, 06:24:50 pm »

I'm getting kind of ticked off at the kobolds and rhesus macaques. My dwarves are sealed inside the mountain; There's no contact with the outside world. But I keep getting messages about the forbidden loot off of corpses getting nicked.

...do I care? Not really. I will once I unseal and start getting kobold ambushers again, I'm sure.

Incidentally: Kobolds are worse than goblins. Mostly because I have no military except my miners decked out in plate armor. I may have to see about removing that trapavoid tag...

This is not only message that can be annoying. I also do not like when game is telling me that my legendary stonecrafter has made another masterpiece - about 2500th.

Or when you're mining.

At least Microcline is special in it's color. I like getting notified of Olivine becuase I use it for decoration. It's worse when you hit something like Mica. Just another gray rock.

My last fortress it was.

You can allow or stop your dwarves from eating these mushrooms, but it's entirely optional and doesn't turn Dwarf Fortress into Dwarf hookah-smoking pad.

Do you somehow get more than 3 per season from the macaques and 6 twice a year from kobolds?

For the longest time dwarves were cancelling stockpiling a dead creature's stuff because they were being interrupted by groundhogs.

The groundhogs were stuck at the bottom of a nearby dry murky pool. Trees were more dangerous to the dwarves than the stranded groundhogs were.

I eventually figured out wtf was going on and sent a marksdwarf to slaughter all of them.

I have no clue how many I've been getting. The point, though, is that I'm getting informed when they're stealing stuff that I don't want, need, or consider my dwarves to possess ownership of. There's a reason I left it forbidden.

Re: annoying announcements

Quote from: Larington
I'd do a search for this but I don't know what it might be called and haven't noticed anything referring to this in the wiki, but is there a way of customising what mineral discoveries cause a game pause state to occur (Also the notifications themselves possibly), as I'd like to be able to leave my dwarves to mining whilst I glance at some other program/website/uni-work/etc? For instance I might get several interruptions due to Alunite or Orthoclase (etc), though I'm quite happy to recieve interrupts for bauxite or gem tiles.

This is often requested, but I've been putting it off until I have time to redo how announcements are stored.  Then you should be able to customize the responses for all of them (no announce, announce but no pause, pause, pause and zoom, etc.).  Dunno when that'll happen though.

i get annoyed at the rock ones a lot, and even moreso the constant "duchess has given birth to a girl!" ones i get once my fortress gets huge. at least the rock is something i care about more. seriously, in a small fort its pretty cool seeing the first few kids pop up, but once you have a supermegatropolis it gets way too frequent.

the message i have been getting for years now is "so-and-so the cat cancels move item to stockpile: too injured"

there are soo many pet cats running around, and more then one name comes up. i have never seen the injured cats in question, and as they are pets and have trouble moving around due to constant passing out it would be hard to get rid of them. and animal caretaking doesnt work, i enabled that on every dwarf i have ages ago, and on every new migrant who appears.

Well, the cat thing... 'good' news. That's a bug.
with a really simple fix.

Here's Toady's stickied post on it:
COMMON REPORT: [40d] Cat cancels Store Item in Stockpile: Too injured

Logged
Toady typically doesn't do things by half measures.  As evidenced by turning "make hauling work better" into "implement mine carts with physics".
There are many issues with this statement.

oh thankyou so very very much. and this is a hilarious bug.

from the wiki -

Your cat kills a vermin.

It reaches down to pick it up.

It realizes it has no hands, cries out "My hands! My beautiful hands! Someone has chopped off my beautiful han... wait, I'm a cat. I don't have hands. Right," and then continues on with its business.

yeah, im going to check these things out on the forums more now. i never thought it could be something silly like this. and to the original poster, kobolt stealing is annoying. its also totally in line with kobolts... picking through the debris of a battlefield and nicking off with the items. but i dont think you should even notice it, really. i had such large invasions that it was literally taking me all year till the next one to get all their junk inside, and hollow out rooms to store it. but for the constant kobolts i probably wouldnt have cared. i hate stealthed things with bows, they can actually kill things, unlike melee.

Yeeeeeesssss! Looking forward to tailored announcements! Then I can finally turn off the "Dwarf cancels brew drink: needs 2 unrotted yada yada yada" and all the other cancellation messages I get because of the endless production cycles I have set up through the manager screen.

If you let he kobolds steal enough loot, they will send big parties to raid your fortress.
Yeah, the " Blaablaa McBlaablaa has created a freaking 9999999th masterpiece" is pretty annoying
