My big complaint with a lot of DF murals is that they're impossible to justify in-game.

Sure, you can have a great-looking mural made out of stone walls, but if there's another layer of rock above that somewhere, nobody's ever going to see it. The player can, sure, but I try to think of things in terms of the gameworld itself.

And yeah, the manpower necessary isn't huge. Building walls doesn't take a lot of time at all, even for unaccomplished masons, and you can always do it in small increments.

Not impossible at all. They have the same purpose as the Nazca lines:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nazca_Lines (whatever that purpose may be  ;D)

Floor murals would be a decorative plaza. Murals built from walls underground would be harder to justify, though.

Also; dwarves can fly. Bridge + dwarf + connected lever = flying dwarf  ;D

I always wondered about the Nazca ruins being some alien conspiracy.  Why does everyone seem to harp on the fact that you can only really see them from the air?  There are such things as blueprints and macho pride, right?
"Dude!  Take a look at this plan, right?  I'm going to lay out all these rocks, and it's going to look like this, like totally awesome, Eagle."
"Dude, that is a totally sweet bluepainting.  We are so totally building that!"

The other thing is, remember this is Dwarf Fortress.  Not only is that one level tall enough for two dragons, it's also too short for three rats.
And the Dwarven hive mind can probably see the painting just fine.

Besides, they're dwarves.  Doesn't matter that no one can see it properly, it's cool and it's theirs.

The dwarven economy is just a stand-in, from what I understand. As it is, it represents an actual economic system about as well as poison ivy represents a salad.

I consider copperblazes itself a mural, or close enough. But the axe mural in it isn't bad.

Why is everyone so obsessed with copperblazes? Orbinches walks all over it in terms of visual aesthetics.
i'd like to ask that question too. i've been inspired and amazed by many fortresses and that is not one of them. no offense.

I just came up with a brilliant idea!!!!

REEEEAALLY time consuming but carping worth it.


Taking advantage of mechanisms, drawbridges of various sorts and etc. ...


...wait for it...




Animating murals.


As far as I can think, it may only be (mono/di)chromatic (dunno which would be more appropriate). Unless you can pile bridges on top of each other, or have different retractable bridges occupying the same spaces (ones that disappear, and others that become walls), you can get some pretty interesting and complex animations done.



So... anybody up for the challenge?


EDIT:
One idea already comes to mind. Make a skull mural or something, and place a pressure switch at the bottom of an execution pit. Upon impact, the skull smiles.

Of course, the above is a conditional frame change. Simple for trying out things, or making identifying complex systems as on/off or something; but what I primarily had in mind was something more like... well, looping animations of dwarves killing elves or a looping animation of the history of the fort. Something.

My advice, you'll need tons and tons of mechanisms the more complex it gets. Depending on the size, even a simple 2-frame animation or conditional change can cost quite a bit (both time and resources).


Oh, and I got another idea, linked to a single lever (setting a dwarf to repeated triggering), make a game being played (like Pong or Galaga or something). Pong sounds simple, and having two dwarves flipping at the same time could make it even funnier.

Gamer dwarves!!!  :D

EDIT 3:
Sorry, one more idea came to mind. Epilepsy Hall. Link a high traffic pressure switch to 2-frame scenes that  are eye jarring, especially to the dwarves (or Armok). Cave adaptation really wouldn't help here. It would, in fact, make it worse.

(I'm going to try this out. I apologize in advance to those who do have epilepsy who may view it.)

I forgot, the timings and effort are way too much for me to fully try out. Plus, I didn't get the desired effect.

 Actually, animated murals is both simpler and more tricky than bridges. Gem windows with different colored gems alternate through their colors, resulting in the possibility of quite long animations. The con is the need for a ton of gems, but I'm willing to cheat for this.

 Edit: Also, my firstborn childs middle-name to the person who finds the fortress entrance based around Awesomeface in the map archives.

I made that one - just to clarify, it's actually made of one-tile bridges. So theoretically the dwarves CAN see it. ;)

Edit: Although, I imagine, probably not in very great detail. It would be a little like looking at one of the huge logos on a basketball court while standing right on it, except more so. But to be honest I made that mostly out of sheer boredom.
