Yep. That'd be why.

It's my understanding that magma can melt rock doors only if it gets into the same tile as the door, which can only happen if the door has been opened already. (caveat: bauxite doors wouldn't melt. Nor would doors carved from raw adamantine, but of course nobody would waste raw adamantine like that).

Perhaps the door in question was briefly opened by a passing pet, dwarf, kobold, or other such creature who just happened to pass through that square, perhaps in an attempt to step around some other obstacle? Do fire imps or magma men open unlocked doors, maybe? Make sure to set the door as "locked" next time to prevent most such accidents. A rampaging building destroyer could still open it, of course.

Same. Magma won't melt rock doors in the vanilla game at least. Perhaps the the OP is playing with a modded version?

Did you lock the door?

I had a puppy walk into the tile of a rock door and get roasted.  I didn't notice the death message, but instead I noticed that my muddy stairs (don't ask) were no longer muddy, and there was molten alunite at the bottom.

In my case, the magma didn't keep the door open for long enough to melt it.

There are certain constructions that will melt. I've had this exact same problem (minus the horrible ending), and I think rock doors that come into direct  contact with magma will definitely melt, unless made of bauxite or adamantine. I know I definitely play vanilla as the only changes I ever made were tilesets, so there might be something more to magma than we guessed. Or we're not reading enough in the wiki's magma entry :(

I have rock doors and wood floodgates happily keeping the magma from going through, for years.

totally weird. what versions are you people playing? i thought it was ghospel truth since as far back as 2d that anything but steel, iron, bauxite, adamantium, raw adamantium and some random alloy (nickel silver or something?) would melt if it came into contact with magma.  i thought it was only constructed walls that were indestructible, as in a wooden dam could hold back a river of magma. i know wooden buildings and pumps catch fire if magma enters their tiles. it even says in the wiki that you need a magma proof mechanism for a door or a floodgate that is holding back magma, or it will melt, which makes bauxite such a sought after stone.

there are so many people who write things like "couldnt do my magma project for years till i finally found bauxite"

if this changed then perhaps not many people noticed as they had stopped trying something that didnt work. or maybe its only an issue if you want to actually open the door occasionally, in which case the magma actually enters the tile and melts the building... i know this is sortof the case for wooden pumps, they dont have to be magma proof so long as they dont get splashed. so very weird. wooden floodgates for magma has to be a bug.

I had a steel floodgate get uninstalled by magma....but now that I've read this forum I'm thinking I must have accidentally hit x when I was looking at it once. It didn't melt, by the way.

IIRC, wooden floodgates/doors don't burn and rock doors/floodgates don't melt if they are near magma. However, if you open the door and the magma is in the same spot as the door/floodgate, exactly that will happen. Maybe, they just get deconstructed, but they are completely useless after that.
So, if you want to play around with magma, your mechanism has to be made of bauxite or adamantine and the door/floodgate has to be made of magma-safe materials.

Do you have temperature turned off? You can save a ton of CPU cycles by turning off temperature and weather, but of course things will not be effected by temperature.

Assuming temperature is active, magma will melt any building it touches if the building is not made of magma resistant materials. IIRC, bauxite, iron, and steel are immune to it. So it adamantine of course, but its highly unlikely you'd waste such a valuable metal on your fortress plumbing.

The exception to this is constructed walls, floors, and stairs. You can even build an aqueduct out of blocks of ice, then run magma through it, and the ice won't melt.

I think what happened was i left it unlocked and a fire imp walked through it. Not having checked the game since, I can't be sure for certain, but I'm sure at least a few dwarves got killed trying to reload a cage trap.

In the future I'm going to build _down_ to the lava, just in case, but yeah, I tried it again, and the door stayed up for ages.

Don't forget, glass furniture is also magma proof. (But not the crafts or instruments)

Magma is only kind of warm in the temperature system.  Otherwise, a dwarf standing at a magma forge would catch on fire.  Therefore, magma does not burn buildings above or next to the magma.  This is indeed a change from the 2d version.  Magma that goes into a building (such as over a bridge, through a floodgate, etc) will make it very hot, which may melt or burn parts of the building.  If any part of the building fails, the whole thing fails, which is typically the problem with steel doors with non-magma-safe mechanisms.
