Got the save. Did succession wars first, as it had a time sensitive aspect to it, and was easy to just put into my DF folder.

I'll make some time for this one here soon, and do this turn. May be a couple days to run it all, but I'll keep you informed with multiple posts.

Priorities. The other game is a competition, and points for this round are awarded for the fastest turn. So, I did that one first when suddenly faced with two at once. I am confident that I can complete things here within three days.

Spring Year 2

You know the drill, Dwarf outcaste to remote landscape to build wealthy fortress because mother was told he stole her favorite cat statue and used it to buy sewer brew and pickles. Same old, same old.

And now I'm here at 'Alehouse'. I only wish the fort itself held up to the name. We have some booze here, and a very small amount of food. The former leader has gotten some fairly nice bedrooms going, but it seems I will be set the task of taking us from hunting and gathering to full sustainable food production.

At the same time, the last leader was trying to connect a road to the trade depot, and I'm to finish it. The numerous limestone rocks in the way, as well as trees in the lower valley make it quite a task. I've ordered our road builders to design a road to the nearest route out of the mountain, leading to the west and south.

To make sure we have something to trade if we get any traders this month, I've designated a barrel-less stockpile for prepared foods.  Putting meals in barrels makes them very easy to store, but hard to sell without getting rid of the barrel.

With the road started and several smoothing and clearing jobs designated, I turn my thoughts to farmland. Checking the food stores, I see we have mostly prepared meals, and many unused seeds. My plan is to dig down from the rock formation our dining hall is set in, and break into the soil level under the valley for underground farms and greenhouses.

So, after a quick look at our labor, and reassigning some more road builders, we get started.

It's slow going, at first everyone is hauling stones from point A to point B, with no real need to do so. I put a stop to that by removing the huge stone stockpile outside. We don't need to waste all that time lugging stone at this point. I also put a refuse stockpile and tanners shop outside, the former leader had set some cats to be butchered, but was letting the skin just rot in the butchers shop. Seems wasteful to me.

At least there is some good news, the miners here are quite skilled and it takes very little time to hollow out the red sand for farm rooms. One of them is the former manager I hear. I must remember to compliment him on his startup of the fort.

The elves have arrived. I've ordered what stone crafts we have to be moved to the depot for trading. I don't really expect much, these being elves after all.

And they actually have something useful! At least to my farmer experience. A full bag of the rare sun berry seeds. With this we will be rolling in the expensive sunshine drink in no time once I get some greenhouses made to grow them. I also traded for some cages for better animal management, some ropes, some bags, and some plants.

I immediately noticed a lack of general stockpile, so after setting up one of the cages to hold puppies and kittens in the dining hall, I moved to add one near the furniture stockpile.

A goblin! Our herbalist ran into him bringing back some wild plants. I promptly told the herbalist to stop it.



He listened, starting by breaking the invader's left arm and right leg, and pummeling the goblin into unconsciousness.



The outcome of course is obvious.

Migrants. The extra hands will be useful, but it brings up the need for a general barracks. Sava's rooms are very nice, but it's simpler for new arrivals.

The skills of those we received seem very broad. A miner, some engravers, a hunter to back up our Ranger, another metal worker, a few fishers and craftsdwarfs, a handful of farmers and four peasants.

I have set some orders for bone bolts and totems to be used from the hunter kills and thief bones. We don't have any military yet, but it will come soon, and ammo to be used for training never seems like a bad thing to me.

With the extra hands, I set up a kennels outside for dog training, I've ordered two as hunting aids, and the rest as war dogs. I also put in some restraints near the bridges to catch thieves once we have war dogs to chain there.

The new migrants Metalsmith has been possessed today. It didn't dawn on me that this was a bad thing, until I realized we have no forge, and no anvil to make one with. Luckily I hate her guts, so I'll happily see her go insane. She is however liked by Tirist, and I only hope the farmer can manage without her friend.

The poor crafter was locked in her room, and I've given the order to carve a coffin for her. I've set in a plan for a tomb inside the mountain for our fallen comrades. Let us hope it takes ages to fill. Fittingly enough for dwarven tombs, our mausoleum has a vein of malachite running through it. I plan to leave the walls there for smoothing and engraving.

Summer arrives with plenty of work still to be done. But at least the trade depot is fully accessible, even if the road isn't completely done, and we have an operating plump helmet farm, even if the greenhouses for outdoor crops are not finished yet.

I've taken the liberty to give Sava and myself a war dog escort. I think this is probably a good idea for any of the manager candidates, new and old. Just for the extra added protection.

Expanded the personal rooms using a copy of Sava's design moving south and east of the current chambers. It will take some time to clear out the stone as we use it, as well as making doors and furniture.

The Metalsmith Ilral has been struck by melancholy. The lack of an anvil is painfully obvious as she wanders around insanely. I've released her from her room, so that her friends here may say their goodbyes.

Humans arrived today and while bringing their wagons to the depot, Sava himself managed to find a kobold lurking near the greenhouse scaffolding. It didn't take much from the legendary pick to knock the kobold into the afterlife.



This was followed a few moments later with Tirist finding another kobold, and taking her frustration over the loss of Ilral out on the small beastman. It's obvious that she's not happy. And while I thought it easy for Sava to kill a kobold, the damage Tirist did with her bare hands, is... a little frightening.



The kobold finally died, and I took a moment to try and calm Tirist down. While talking to her I found out that she apparently has a growing grudge with Kogan, one of the woodworkers. I think that may have been part of why she exploded so much on that kobold.

A few hours after that, one of our hunters was dragging a deer corpse back to be butchered when he came across a goblin trying to sneak it's way in to steal children. It only took one bolt between the eyes.

We were finally able to obtain an anvil from the humans, even if it was too late to save Ilral, it will be there the next time this occurs, or when we expand into metal production. Along with that we traded for a large amount of food and cheese, some iron bolts, some booze, and a couple bins each of leather and cloth for any more moody requests.

It was decided to ask the humans to bring a selection of weapons with their caravans next year, as it should be time for a formal military by then.

A thresher by the name of Fath has begun acting strangely, Sava says it's a fey, but I wonder. Either way She has taken upon herself to make something in a craftsdwarf shop. She has requested shells for her work, and this has left me scrambling, trying to get the other dwarfs to eat turtle over freshly killed venison is a daunting task.

Eventually we are able to give her the shells she needs, and she produced a skillfully made piccolo. She named it 'Mezum Egur', or the Smoke of Sorrows. I expect perhaps to remember our metalcrafter who died earlier this month. It eerily echoes off our mountain home when played.

After that morose artifact, I was about as depressed as I could be. I was then alerted to something momentous outside the living quarters by an infant's cry. It seems our original ranger has given birth to a baby girl. The father is Rakust, the herbalist who found a thief earlier this year, she will be their second child, as she is younger sister to the child Sodel. They have named her Savanna, in honor of Sava's first year leadership.

Migrants arrive once more, as if we didn't have enough layabouts clogging the barracks. Eight dwarves and two dogs. Three farmers, a peasant, child, stonecrafter, bowyer and glassmaker. Not really much use at this point, other than to help with hauling. The crafters at least should be useful later on when the more dedicated crafting areas are complete.

I've decided to add a walled off area to the brook for fishing, and eventual waterwheel construction. I will dig a tunnel down as the only access that leads into the farming area and food stockpiles under the dining hall.

Summer has come to an end, and things are moving smoothly. My major project of the trade route road is complete, and the farming and food stockpiles are almost ready to be completed.

And here's summer , I may take a nap here between seasons since I'm halfway through, and finish the other later tonight or tomorrow morning.

wow, your story telling is perfect and you're not completely trashing my bedroom designs! congratulations! sorry but, food management is not one of the thing i am good at, i usually live of berries and trader food until i can get some sort of fishing and hunting industry going.one minor suggestion is to designate the farm plots for flooding, if they become muddy even once in their lives they can later be fertilized as opposed to dry farms which can not.

No worries. just figured I could do food management, since I think I'm pretty good at it. Chose a farmer and all, as my dwarf. There's lots of things to be done later after I get things set up, and there are channels you set up to fill the moats once we have pumps to raise water up, that could easily be adapted to flood the whole farm area. Or another channel could be dug for that purpose later(maybe when my turn comes around again). I wouldn't worry about it right now, though, we will have plenty of food when I'm done.

And yes, we should have seiges soon, ambushes at least from all the gobo killing. Starting the autumn run now, may even finish the whole turn before the night is done.

Autumn

We've struck a vein of raw Chrysocolla gem, a pretty light blue gemstone. I've given the order to put them in the general stockpile for later cutting and encrusting.

The dwarven caravan has arrived, though the are mostly ignoring the road and have to travel for quite a ways to get here. I may channel around the road some, to give more incentive to use it.

The liaison was so far away she decided to take a walk on the mountainside during the wait for her traders to arrive. During this time She managed to find out a kobold lurking just southwest of the bedrooms. Having no skill in battle, and not used to stopping thieves, the Liaison went one way, and the kobold ran the other. I hope at least the thief has had a good scare.

Following this empass, our dyer Olon was out bringing back a picked herb when he also found a kobold. Olon took off after the kobold with the intent of stopping him from returning to his beast hovel. After a quick chase up the mountain, the dyer managed to break the beastman's ankle, slowing down his flight, and making the thief turn and fight. The dyer didn't come away completely unscathed though, taking a scratch to the lower body near the kidney, making the dwarf briefly Nauseous.



The dyer grabbed the kobold and crashed him into the stone mountainside mangling both limbs on the right side and knocking the thief unconscious. The delighted dyer, proceeded to start breaking fingers one at a time until the kobold finally bled out.

The dwarves brought us a bunch of useful items. I traded mostly thief gear, along with some cheese roasts and stone crafts for booze, food, some barrels, a couple extra picks, some cloth bins(with spider silk for emergencies) and a leather bin. And in the process Fath gained enough skill to become a trader, as we traded nearly 20,000 stone worth of goods, and Sava was busy digging.

The new stockpiles and food processing areas are completed. So I've ordered the removal of the old setup. That area could be easily converted into crafting areas.



The last finishing touches on the farming areas are moving the fish production area into the tunnel connecting the walled fishing area with the food stockpiles.

More Migrants. And the bedrooms still have barely even been dug out. I ordered some more beds to add to the barracks for the time being. Eight seems to be the lucky number for immigrations this year.  We received a woodworker, mason, animal trainer, trapper, two farm jobs(cheese maker and potash maker), and two peasants.

Along with this migration we are up to an even fifty dwarves. And this brings Sava as the first Mayor of Alehouse, as well as the ability to create a fortress guard. For now I'm going to use the old food stockpile as a temporary admin quarters, and I will leave the guard to the next manager, who's priority should be military construction and defenses.

Sava finally got around to talking to the Liaison by the name of Kib. We ordered some armor in the form of chain mail, plate mail, helms, gauntlets and boots. Along with some stone fuel. I don't know if we have any magma deeper in the mountain, but it's better to have coal around just in case.

The road has also been walled off on either side, to try and provide a safer route for traveling merchants. There are a few smaller gaps for working dwarves to travel through that should eventually be closed with doors. The various walls should also be considered for marksdwarf patrols when defense matters are considered.

As the traders leave I give the order to dismantle the current trade depot, and move it to the other side of the road for a more central location. I also give special clearance to use platinum nuggets for building materials. An impressive depot will make all of us happy as we show off our wealth to our visitors.

I think the lack of decent quarters and his job as mayor has gone to Sava's head. For some strange reason he has mandated that we make two bucklers. I've ordered some wooden ones made for the time being, though I expect them to be traded away in the future, as they won't be much good for blocking metal weapons.

My final project for the food industry is the creation of an animal corral. I've designated it to be dug into the rock near the butcher's shop. I've also ordered the tanners shop moved right next to the butchers, and put in a larger more permanent meal stockpile just below the dining hall.



Each small rectangular chamber should be set with ropes to hold animals for breeding. The cage up in the dining hall is good for keeping the animals contained, but there isn't enough room for animal copulation(Thank Armok, who'd want to see that while they are eating). It is really best suited to hold young animals while they grow to butchering size.

Winter

So far, winter has been a pleasant change. Peaceful work with little interruptions. Most of us have been working on the trade road's walls. We've trained up some of the dogs into war dogs, and started work on beds and doors to at least start up private bedrooms.

I've also started a clothier's shop to make some extra ropes to use in the corral. We already have one pair of breeding horses, and may be able to obtain other species through trading or trapping as time passes.

Did I say there was no news? I was wrong. The valley was visited by a pack of wolves, and while our hunters have been doing well against them, Edem took a heavy bite to the stomach breaking some lower ribs, and setting him to heal for at least a month.

And to make his presence known once more, Sava has ordered the prohibition of bolt trading. Not that I expect any traders to travel here in the winter.

After noticing that Edem was complaining of thirst, I decided that with the water source so far away it would be a good idea for me to set up a well for water. I've started a room just south of the general barracks, that's connected by a channel down and to the river. When it's completed we should have a well nearby for water hauling and a small stockpile for buckets.

My fellow farmer Bim has become the father of a new son. The mother is a cook by the name of Mosus, and has allowed me to name the child.  I have named him Piron, after pig iron. Maybe such a name will grant him talent with the metal industry as he grows up.

Near the end of the season, while we are trying to haul the rocks out of the well channel, one of the stonecrafters were possessed!  He immediately grabbed three chunks of limestone and some wooden logs and dragged them to a craftsdwarf workshop.



The result is a stone flute. I wonder why all our major craft artifacts are instruments. It was named Gatalcubor, "The Ageless Workers". And when I look closer, I think that cooking dwarf on there is supposed to be me. I'm honored. This one is worth 10,800 stone while the piccolo was only worth 4800 stone.

As we near the end of the year, The well has been completed and we have started smoothing the areas around it. We need to make some more barrels for drinks when the next leader takes over.

I'm looking forward to going back to just cooking, farming, and brewing myself. Whomever is next should focus on military production and defenses as I've said before.  You might think about putting in some stairs from the barracks going up, and walling in an archery range and training area.

Further construction could be done with water management and wheels to power pumps for moving it around. There's a set up left over from Sava's first rule for a waterfall in the middle of the dining hall, and connections for the moats to be filled, and possible irrigation to the farms once pumps are available.

Crafting is currently in a skeletal amount, as larger groups of workshops with stockpiles of relevant goods could be dug out. This includes, leather works, dyed cloth industry, metal forging, and any other various crafting groups(gem cutting, bow making etc)

And with these last few notes I've taken myself off working for the Village Manager, and shall let someone else take the spot. I wish you good luck, and hope all goes well over the next few years.

All done, will compress and mail it off to Sava here in a second. My map compressor dosen't work well, so if you can extract and compress the map and put it up on the map archive for us to view, that'd be great.

As to the Sava/Fath thing, I just went by what names were set in the save. XD Anything else is just too confusing.
