I find that I spend a disproportionate amount of time searching the unit list for dwarves that aren't working.  The 'No Job' message, normally quite visible, is easily covered up when the dwarf's name (i.e. from current game, "Lòr Foldtome") is joined by his various titles ("the Fortuitous Perfection of Killers"), nickname ("Ur Bravefriend", naming his generation as that of the seven founders and telling a bit of his character), and 'profession' annotations (in this case "Hunter," letting me keep track of who's chasing what with an axe when demobilized, even though he's actually a wood chopper / reservist who is currently on duty guarding a bridge).

So, it would be very, very nice if the 'No Job' message in particular was printed over top of this information, the way relationship status is in the 'relationships' screen.  It would be doubly nice if it was displayed in red when and if the background letters were yellow:

Lòr 'Ur Bravefriend' Ostembil GïsstirNo Jobagúsh, Hunter

Alternately, as mentioned in the title, some sort of margin marker would do.

*applauds*
I agree, the name shouldn't cover up job status.

And this is how tinned food was invented.
Alternately: The Brick Testament. It's a really fun look at what the bible would look like if interpreted literally. With Legos.
Just so I remember

And that is why I kill dwarves with overly long names and never use nicknames.

I wish that this were not so.

Ah.  Ahem.  Having finally been moved out of my normal deep ruts of habit by the problem, I find with a little experimentation that there is a work around.  Simply open the Jobs menu, and page up to arrive at the bottom of the list.  There you shall find the names of all your Soldiers, all your Nobles, every Dwarf whom is on break, and every Dwarf who stands idle.  One may select creature as per the unit menu.
