[40d] Tower-cap Tree growing underwater and blocking Water flow
« on: January 31, 2009, 07:25:13 am »

  • Discover an Underground River
  • Dig an underground canal, like a 20×1 tunnel (for underground well, reservoir, whatever)
  • Let water flow into the canal, then stop it (for maintenance, whatever)
  • After some time, let the water flow again
  • Wait, wait wait
  • Water is stopped. Fortress flooding. After investigation, discover that Tower-Cap trees have grown to adult size in that canal, under 7/7 water, and are now blocking the canal

So unless Tower-Cap are algue or something that's probably two bugs : one for growing under 7/7 water, another for blocking Water flow.

If you do the same thing outside, those trees will do the same thing.

That is actually pretty cool and realistic

Giant mushroom growing while fully submerged under running water to the point of blocking a tunnel from water?

Mmmhhhh... there's isn't a single plant we know capable of doing that, I'm not sure about realistic. Coherent with the DF universe, I don't see that either, but maybe that's just me.

trees can also block lava so I'm guessing a few things need tweaking

Trees and towercaps shouldn't be obstacles period. Or, at the very least, creatures should be able to pass through their tiles at a reduced speed. In the meantime you might try paving future channels.

Blocking creature movement, why not. I'm not in favor of it, greatly reduced movement sounds better, but whatever. I'm more concerned about blocking water flow.

One of my older forts got flooded as a result of this 'feature'.

I'm ready to downgrade it from a feature to a bug now. In my current fort, I was careful to pave over absolutely everything that might get muddy, to keep random trees from springing up everywhere. But tower caps can grow underneath buildings! Paved roads just hide them and prevent them from popping up and blocking the canal, but they can grow under closed doors and closed floodgates, and on top of upright spike traps (at least!), only appearing when the doors are opened or spikes retracted.

I would like to see:
A) Nothing can grow on smoothed rock. (Much simpler)
-or at least-
B) Nothing can grow on the same tile as a building/construction.

This could be solved by paving over the tiles you build your doors/floodgates/spike traps on, along with all the regular floors.
All three of those can still be built on top of a paved floor anyway IIRC...

That's the first thing I tried, you can't build anything over paved roads: "Building present"
