More in-depth statues
« on: January 30, 2009, 02:58:10 pm »

It would add some really nice customizing to rooms/tombs/anything if statues worked a bit like engravings. All statues would be in the likeness of people from history, dwarves in your fort and even deities. The statue maker will prefer to make statues of their friends and family and wont make statues of deities other then their own.

Dwarves can then admire them on a sliding scale like they do with material they like. They will be ecstatic to see statues of their family members and deities (and themselves if they're immodest  ;))  and really like statues of their friends. Especially if they're made of a material they like.

This has come up a few times and has also been noted down in the dev pages.

# Bloat2, MORE ITEM IMPROVEMENTS, (Future): Do more with matching up specific item improvements to the item type. Figurines can have associated shapes, much like engravings, and these can generate more slots for improvement. An image added on an improvement can do the same thing. So a shield could have an image of a tortoise engraved on it, and the tortoise could be given ruby eyes, etc.

# Bloat221, ART IMAGE COMPLEXITY AND IMPROVEMENT, (Future): Item improvement image complexity can be determined by craft quality, the image can generate slots for further improvements on the item to occupy, but it needs to do this in an abstract way that works for detail events as well, and also statues and figurines

# Bloat224, STATUE IMPROVEMENTS, (Future): Describe statues, analagous to figurines, could have arms that can be moved and hidden levers and buttons and so on, could be linked to creature defs and be animated or come alive

Ah, sorry. A bit odd, I used the search engine to see if this has been suggested and nothing came up, I just did it again and those topics show up  :-\.

You probably searched from within a topic, which searches for things within that topic only.

Hmmm:  Maybe there should be a 5 day waiting period (after signup) before posting to suggestions?

Aw, these threads aren't harmful.  They're a good way for newbies to learn how the forum works.

Yeah, it's not like it's a bad idea. And-while it may be an older subject-I don't think that everything suggested here is a retread, is it?

Really--new people who are actually posting useful and well thought out suggestions (which this arguably is) should be encouraged and developed.

Welcome, BloodBeard!

If you have any questions, feel free to PM me, and I'll do my best to answer them, although after (slightly under) a year on the boards, there's still things I don't know about them, but I'll do my best.

They are, and I'm not trying to be elitist, it just seems that maybe expecting users to read a few days worth of the suggestion threads before they start a topic might be a good idea.

I'm reasonably certain that my first (mega) list of suggestions contained 50% redux...

Let me echo this.  Didn't mean to come off as dismissive.

There's good reasons for arguing that it would be a good idea, but honestly, it's just not. Requiring 5 days, before someone posts, presupposes that everyone that comes in is already committed to posting to the Forums on a long-term basis.

Unfortunately, people just don't work that way. Not all of them. As in sales, a lot can be made from "impulse buys", or in this case, impulse posting.

Yes, you might lose a few trolls who'd quickly get distracted and leave, but DF's a small enough game that a good poster is worth 10 or even 20 trolls--who the tightly knit DF community can gather together to drive off/ignore.

The best thing that can be done with new people is to simply take them in hand and actually commit your time to helping them become good posters.

In my defence, I joined the forum 15 days ago and I did read past suggestions, I mistakenly 'Search'ed the wrong area and wouldnt have posted this otherwise. I've modded other forums before and I know how annoying it can be to see the same things posted over and over. You can go ahead and lock this if that's what you do with these.

I'm sorry dude, I'm not trying to give you a hard time.

You did try searching, and that's 99.9999% of what's annoying about people reposting.

I'm going to shut up now

I've done the same exact thing, myself, until someone pointed it out to me. In my defense, there's not much of an indication that the Search button works that way, and it's a pretty easy mistake to make.

And I rather doubt it'll get locked.

Toady-wise and beneficent god that he is-doesn't like it when we fight to no purpose, so horrible flamewars occasionally get locked, but, except for the occasional short-lived poll, I haven't ever noticed much else.

This post will likely either go on to live a rich life, get seriously derailed (as it's in the process of being), or simply fade away, in a more or less dignified manner.

In any case--no worries.

Hey, this topic is actually pretty interesting compared to the electricity ones, since it's about something that'll actually get implemented at some point!

I haven't read the other threads on statues, but presumably, you could still get worthwhile discussion out of this topic...You just have to go a little more in depth.  Like, pick a facet of this whole statues thing and explore it more!

Actually not a bad idea. A few days before being able to make new THREADS in the suggestion forum. Replying to existing threads would of course be allowed.

Or perhaps a SMF mod causing a huge blinking message "DID YOU SEARCH FIRST?!" to be printed the first few times a newly registered user creates a new thread.

You won't have trouble supplying the Countess with cats, or producing the annual idols to be offerred to the castle. Every fortress is a pale reflection of Ghormenghast..
