Well, I haven't heard of many variants at all of Crawl, even though it's open source. How can you be sure that people will even MAKE all those variants.

Also, nozomband cracked me up.
Well all of those are based on true variants I've come across...
As for crawl, I see variants of that all the time! As a matter of fact their not as easy to notice usualy beucase they change the name but yeah...

blah blah blah

There might be 2 or 3 good variants of adom

blah blah

And that's all you need for it to be worth it.

Has anyone besides me looked at the Crawl source? Therein lies the reason I believe there aren't many variants. There's roughly a bazillion lines of code and a few comments.

That's the difference between Crawl and Angband. Angband's got comments commenting on comments (not quite, but still...). If what Tom's said on the forums about his code being legible and having plentiful comments, we can probably assume that there would be more than a few variants.

Thank you SO MUCH for your holy permission!  There's a lot of variants that I consider a lot of fun.  I'm so sorry that I offend you badly just by playing them.

What? I never gave you permission to play variants you filthy peasant! GET BACK TO THE MINES! >:(

But no, the reason I dont like variants isent because people enjoy playing them. The reason is because usualy their just the original with some minor addition witch, in the long run dosent really matter at all(probably because you wont even bother to try to get to the end). And mabey sometimes you might find one good one with lasting features when searching through the MANY. You probably have better luck then me.

See, I've only ever played variants because someone told me "This variant is awesome".  And they've been good.  I don't actively go looking for 'em.

Well when I go about the internet looking for rougelikes I must have grown a strange ability that every time I search for any (and I've played just about all the well known ones) I come across piles of horrid variants to angband. Of course the person who tipped you off probably had the same problem.

Also NO I would never intentionaly look for variants, that would be like looking for aids...
