The fire, it does nothing!
« on: January 29, 2009, 11:41:45 pm »

Greetings dwarfs all around, I am new to this game, and have been reading the forums for a while, and i want to share one of my experiences, and see if this is normal.

So, first some backstory. I had been building a underground fortress in a completly flat land, full of trees, a brook on the edge of the map and a magma pipe that was on the surface. Since the first level was normal soil, my miners were Legendary in no time, and i had to find a way to keep them busy... By building around 120 rooms that i still wouldn't need, considering i just had 7 dwarves. The caravan passes by, no problem. It was the end of winter and i had just about eveything to welcome dozens of new immigrants, which did not want to arrive.

Suddenly, around 15 squares away from my fortress entrance(where the magma pipe was) an imp decides to attack something and bam, what do you know? A fire. With the map as it was, it would soon turn into a full fledged forest fire and so it did. It was growing at inmesurable speed and there was no way of stopping it, so i quickly acted and forbid the outside. I was chilling inside, knowing nothing would happen to me but then something happened...

Immigrants at the opposite edge of the map! I knew i had to act quick, but they wouldn't come to my fortress because i had set the outside to forbidden, so they simply frozen in place without reaching my entrance. The fire quickly consumed every square that gave access to my fort so i had to take another measure, with my legendary miner i dug all the way to the opposite end of the map, faster than the fire could spread. I opened a ramp just infront of the immigrants and they ran in..... Bu my legendary miner went outside! And he tried to go back in the main entrance, rather than the route i had conveniently dug to the miners.

On his way to the entrance of my fortress, anything i did he ignored so he just kept going. He ran through the fire, that is right, he ran through a 5 square thick wall of fire but he didn't even as much as burn himself. He arrives at the entrance to my fortress and decides to TURN BACK going all the way to the other tunnel, right through the fire. Repeat at least five times, my miner has run through a wall of fire succesfully without a single burn.

I wanted to get back at the imp by making a pit and caging him down there surrounded by water, this didn't work too well since my dwarf decided by poor planning to cave in the colloseum, killing himself in the process. I find it strange that he could survive fire but not a simple cave in, kind of stupid of him. Nevertheless, to honor his fire survival, i abandoned the idea of making the colloseum and instead making it into a special burial room for him alone. I made a square platform with his tomb, the tomb of his pet cat(which i had prompty killed just to burry it with him) and an artifact statue that had an image of an imp killing a deer.

RIP Nish Kubuksazir, braver of the flames of hell.

PS: Really great game.

Fire will eventually set a dwarf on fire, but running through it he'll make it out fine. Now if the fire had hit your stationary immigrants, they would have just stood there and caught on fire. Dwarves currently ignore fire, so they will path right through it.

Today One still didn't program fire AI. We take it as the dwarven way of thinking.

"Being on fire is cool! Better show it off to everybody!"

Can't end the story there. You still haven't told us if the booze stockpile survives.

What does that have to do with anything?

It's about as relevant as the image you posted. ;)

Dwarves on their own move too fast to get caught on fire, unless they stand in one place for any period of time. Caravans, too, move too quickly to be burned.

Goblin ambushes and sieges, on the other hand, not so much.

A trap entrance utilizing this idea could probably be made. I might try this if I find a suitable location.

Mine demonstrates how DF AI works.
