[40d] "Tame" Dragon attacks King
« on: January 29, 2009, 02:15:53 pm »

So, in my game, a dragon showed up, I caught in a cage trap, and the Dungeon Master tamed it. Everything was fine, the dragon wasn't killing all the dwarves.

Then, I met all the conditions to get the King, and when he showed up, the dragon went crazy and started attacking the King. And after killing him, he proceeded to attack everything in sight.

I am aware of the whole "Cannot be properly trained if it tasted Dwarven blood" thing, and then I remembered two things.

  • When the dragon showed up, it killed a furnace operator with fire. It never actually fought the operator, the dragon just blew fire at him, and he died in the heat.
  • The dragon did kill a stray war dog in melee combat before being captured.

Any ideas on what's going on?

was was faux tame.

animals that have previously killed a dwarf never tame completely

or it burned him by accident, while attacking other stuff

I think there's a current bug that causes dragons not to get credit for firebreath kills...

... oh, here it is: # Req340, FIRE FLOW SLAYER CREDIT, (Future): Creatures don't get credit for killing creatures directly with flows.

So that would explain why the death of your furnace operator didn't make the dragon a marked enemy of your civ.  Not sure why the dog kill didn't count, though -- maybe pets are treated differently than other entity members in this regard.

There seem to be a lot of indications that kings often don't actually "belong" to the civ they rule.  Was your king an elf or anything weird like that?

No, the King was a dwarf.

However, I think I found out why the dragon attacked the King. The dragon was an enemy of several groups, including the "Romantic Knife", which the King was a member of. I think that's what caused the dragon to attack only the King.

Haha, good detective work.  Those all-or-nothing revenge dynamics produce some interesting results.

You should flesh this out into a story about revenge, betrayal, friends, love, sex, drugs, war, money power. . .

In my opinion, that is so totally not a bug. that is AWESOME.

This has been reported a few times before, both here and on the wiki.  If it's been observed with anything besides dragons and civ heads, I've yet to see it.

It is, however, awesome.
