I think Toady said something about this one time, and I'm too spineless to make a wrong guess that might contradict DF canon.

Goblins ride velociraptors?  That is awesome.

Also, I tend to picture them either way depending on context.  Often when playing DF I think of them just as they are, ASCII symbols.

I have to say I prefer thinking of them with beards, though.  The associated implications for the differences between dwarf courtship and what we see as "normal" make dwarves much more interesting.  Take away the gal's beards and, well, they're more like little humans than a species of their own.

This is why I don't use graphic packs.  To me, the dwarves are just ☺ and ☻, and a world that is exactly as the game presents it.

What, so Elves can get away with looking effeminate and tall and be called a separate race? We can go to San Francisco and see that in Humans! Where is the dwarven justice in that? Clearly Elves are separated by their common culture, just as how I imagine dwarves to be.

I imagine both male and female dwarves looking exactly the same. I guess it makes sense considering I don't usually bother checking so I rarely know which my dwarves are until one of them pops out a kid.

And yes, that means they both have beards.

If goblins ride velociraptors, they'll eventually combat cyborg dwarves, figure out how to build lightsabers, and cause Bill Gates to kill Santa.
Lesson: Do not type "inport skynet" in python.

I intend to turn beards on for female dwarves in my modded versions.

What, so Elves can get away with looking effeminate and tall and be called a separate race? We can go to San Francisco and see that in Humans! Where is the dwarven justice in that? Clearly Elves are separated by their common culture, just as how I imagine dwarves to be.

Elves are narrow.  And I generally assume they have long, pointy ears.

I love the Discworld series, so yes. Female dwarves have beards.
They also have crossbows; peasants get drafted if I'm in charge. Only recently found out they're all female.

Elves do it in trees. Humans do it in wooden structures. Dwarves? Dwarves do it underground. With magma.

Beak Dog raws
Code: [Select]
[BODY:HUMANOID:2EYES:2EARS:NOSE:2LUNGS:HEART:GUTS:ORGANS:THROAT:NECK:SPINE:BRAIN:MOUTH]
And according to Toady, they're velociraptors.  Similar or identical raw structure only means they follow the same basic bodyplan.  It confers or denies no other traits.

..why are they called dogs if they don't walk on four legs? None of this makes sense!

Because they aren't called dogs; they're called beak dogs.

A lot of things in the real world use that sort of weird naming as well. The culture probably just uses them similarly to how dwarves would use dogs.

I have two reasons for my vote:
-Intertia. Dwarves have always seemed to be bibearded (yes, I'm inventing a term)in DF.
-3PS. http://www.threepanelsoul.com/view.php?date=2008-04-21 That is how I picture dwarves. Of course, there are times that they rise above being simple loldorfs to become full Dwarves. Just not often. Yet.

Wouldn't "bibearded" just mean they have two beards?

It certainly could.  Now see what you've done?  Now, someone will mod that after the next release.

I... don't think I want to know where the other beard is.

Obviously it is the neck-beard!

I was going to say "another beard, under the first beard", but I suppose that's exactly a neck-beard.

Or maybe it's the titanic eyebrows dwarves get drawn with sometimes.  A brow-beard.
