Anyone want to start a DF record book?
« on: January 28, 2009, 10:45:43 am »

I would have put this in the suggestions thread but it's not really an addition to the game. Basically, why don't we start a book of world records for DF. The records we use don't really need to be in the context of the game but they could be.
ex.
Most valuable artifact (in context)
Largest Siege on record (in context)
Highest FPS recorded (out of context)

This allows for an even larger set of goals for many different people. Architecture lover may want to create the Longest Unbroken Pipe System or Most Volume of a Tower. And since some of the records are based on luck, breaking the records is not limited to crazy DF addicts (ex. Most Moods in 10 years). Of course the Highest FPS record is imposible to break unless your a crazy rich computer builder and have a Core i7 extreme supercooled with liquid helium but it does provide an interesting tid-bit of info for the rest of us ;)

So, to boil it down, would anyone be interested in starting said book?

Yes, I would be interested in starting the official Dwarf Fortress record book.

Ok so here is what we have to do get this going:
1. compile list of records to set.
2. create a committee which will judge the validity of records and to decide on records that that can't be expressed in numbers  (e.g. most awesome defenses)
3. create place to compile the information: a forum topic will not do. It takes too long to look through the entire topic to look for records.
4. ....
5. Profit!!

Rules:
1. no evidence means it didn't happen.
2. If you're caught photoshopping once you will get all your records erased and get epic banned.
3. Must be done without using tweak or cheaty mods (init file editing is allowed)
4. If you are not running a plain vanilla DF install (aside from GFX mods), you have to state any changes made from the original RAWs.
5. if anyone comes up with any more please post them

A record that can't be expressed in numbers is not a record, because there is nothing to record. Recors are about measurable achievemnts.
"Most Awesome Defenses" is about art, and subject to personal taste.

I think we should still have those types of record because it would be awesome to try to break those kinds of records.  Also it would be pretty hard to cheat on making that kind of record.

Since it is subject to person taste I think we should make a committee made out of 7 members who will vote or maybe we will just have everyone vote with a poll or something.

These are the current record catagories i can think of:

DF RECORD BOOK

Total Armor and Garb Value
Total Furniture Value
Total Other Objects Value
Total Archetecture Value
Total Displayed Value
Total Held/Worn Value

Most Valuable Artifact
Most Valuable weapon
Most Valuable Piece of furniture
Most Valuable Piece of Armor
Most Valuable Piece of Clothing (non metal)
Most Valubale Meal
most valuable large gem
most valuable community fort

architecture
Longest wall
tallest structure
building with biggest volume
Biggest Dam
most elaborate bridge
most elaborate road
most elaborate burial chamber

misc fortress stats

most Food stored
most gems set into one item
most cats
most dogs
longest running community fort

Military

biggest seige
most elves killed in total
most mega beasts killed

For fun
most complex dwarfputer
Biggest stock pile of silk socks
most spectacular ending to a fortress

Please please make suggestions for more records.

Thanks for taking up the project! The only record I really really want to see is highest FPS so that I can create/buy said computer components to get best FPS ever!

Preventing cheating can easily be done by uploading saves. I doubt anyone would actually doctor a DF screen shot, but you never know these days.

Also, Captain Ironblood should be disqualified from "Most Bad-assed Dwarf" as then no one would be able to take that title. Too bad-assed for the record books.

There could be a separate category for each entry on the "Stocks" screen (i.e. Logs, Bars, Drinks, etc.).

What about a category for "Highest Number of Different Tame Animals"?

What about that Moldath dwarfette?
See killed a whole army of goblins ( excluding the beak dogs and trolls ) , then soon after she killed two brazen colossus and a dragon.

Ok we need to create a list of all the records that we should record.

Also, could we use the dfwiki as a homebase? I know there's gonna be alot of talk about which records are valid and what not so that could get messy.

Dwarf Fortress Wiki would be a great place, it organizes disorganized thoughts.

Most dwarves in one fort!

This depends a lot about the CPU.. Of course one could set the pop cap to 200000 and then let the game run couple weeks on 1 FSP...
