Nay, it just respawns the animals on the site every time you reclaim. Regardless of whether or not they were dead or not.
I'll admit that I've never reclaimed one of my forts, but I've seen pictures where people have had several hundred troglodytes show up, and stuff like that. I doubt they were there in the initial embark.

I have an extremely wealthy fortress that connects to a haunted chasm.  When I went back there in adventure mode, I had to fight off gigantic swarms of zombie trolls, zombie ratmen, zombie mole-dogs, zombie troglodytes, you name it.  No zombie GCS though, sadly.

seriously, what versions you guys playing? ive been making forts for adventure mode and they are allways totally empty when i revisit. even the one i had attached to a chasm. and i mean EMPTY, nothing in there at all except non tame named creatures locked in cages. is this because i commit genocide against everything in fort mode so perfectly there is nothing left to repopulate? arent chasms supposed to spawn things every time you visit them? how do i make this happen?

oh, and to danaru, you can tame your GCS if you have a dungeon master and if it hasnt tasted dwarf blood yet. and maybe pet blood as well, i dont quite remember. you can then put it up for adoption, and draft whoever picks it up. it will follow them around everywhere, like owned cats do. mine got injued in the brain by a goblin crossbowmen this way and never truly got better. and beware, i have found that a pit full of 100 or so pets will actually tend to kill anything hostile you throw in there, including titans, hydras, giant scoripions and small armies of captured goblins with their weapons still in hand. dont waste your GCS on such a folly.
