A New Project: Dwarf Fortress P&P system
« on: January 26, 2009, 11:01:31 pm »

So here's my idea for a community project.  Creating a pencil and paper RPG system based on Dwarf Fortress!  Awesome right?  I know, thanks.

See, this'll make playing an actual Dwarf Fortress PnP or PbP game allot easier since we'll already have rules designed specifically for them and they'll be free for anyone to use.

Course I don't really know the crunch of DF's systems, but the basic stuff we'd really need is just the combat system.  Maybe we can pick Toady the Great's brain for ideas on how he plans to implement things in the future.  Hell, we could pre-playtest it for him!  The pain thing is, I want to play a PnP RPG with really realistic combat.  Where you don't just get a bunch of hit points and then drop dead or unconscious when they reach zero.  I wanna be able to pinch my enemies until they pass out from the pain!

Fudge might be a good system to adopt towards this.  Injury based combat (rather then hitpoint based combat) is possible under this system.  And fudge is a system that's supposed to be re-designed towards your setting.

I'm going to have to second on the Fudge system. I've read through the 1995 edition, and thought the similarities to Dwarf Fortress' system were striking. Read up about it.

Um... I get the feeling that if I searched "Fudge" I wouldn't find what I was looking for.

I personally think it is a bit... early... to make a Dwarf Fortress pnp game.

Id suggest waiting until the game gets closer to version 1 (actually version 2) especially since many things in Dwarf Fortress will be entirely changed.

Well the point is that I don't want to wait.  It will take less time for a bunch of us to throw together a decent approximation than it will for Toady the Great (blessed be his name) to type every line of code then go back and make sure it all works.

Well then your better off sticking with what Dwarf Fortress is now... then what Toady has reported he wanted to do in the future.

Supernatural Martial arts, Magic, godly influence, demon resurection, the underworld, planes, souls, artifacts with powers, prostetic super bodyparts, bodyswitching, dual souled individuals, curses, Spherical lands... There is a lot in there.

See, now we're talking!  I didn't even know about all that stuff!

Well even if we don't make a DF PnP system we can talk about DF like systems right?  Any others that would be safer to look up?

The Battletech system uses a damage system for each target area of the mech, with internal damage hitting subsystems.

Could change that around for personal level combat by having external armor be the actual armor such as plate and greaves, internal structure be the person inside the armor, and damage to the subsystems would be to organs such as the heart, as well as muscle groups and possibly veins. That is the closest system to what is currently used that I can think of.

Edit: Sorry for the edit, just thought of some further uses for the Battletech system. It would allow a varied armor system, so you could wear steel plate for your chest and get by with leather gloves and boots. Combat system could also be adapted "fairly" easily, though there are only 3 or 4 melee weapons to use as examples.

A dwarf fortress PnP could easily be adjusted to keep up to date with the dwarf fortress game, as PnP is much easier to add to.

One of the advantages of Fudge is that it's freely distributed.  With something like Battletech, they might be a little touchy about you stealing their content.

I hadn't realized that someone purchased the rights to it back from Microsoft. However, the character sheets are freely available from their site, and it could be considered a homebrew version for personal scale combat.
