Elusive squares

I admit it, I'm an architecture whore. All my recent fortresses have been filled with perfect squares, equilateral triangles, and so many circles. Just one problem: My 9x9 squares all look like rectangles, because of the default tileset. What's worse, I can't seem to get a square tile set to work on my machine, it always ends up even More distorted that the default.

all squares are rectangles lolololol.
i too have noticed that 3x3 squares look like rectangles. it looks wrong to me as well and i too would like a tileset.

My tiles are perfectly square, as far as i can see.

Is the init option [BLACK SPACE] turned off?

Try messing around with your [GRID] option (bonus, messing with both the grid and the screen resolution, you can make your play screen 2 to 4 times bigger!)

While I can't say for sure, the problem could very well be that your screen resolution might not be correct for your monitor, or the ratio between your [GRID] and [WINDOWX][WINDOWY] may not be properly set.

Messing with the grid settings in the init will fix it. Just need to find a setting you like.

Though do realize if DF lags as things are, this could make things worse. As on my laptop I like my adjusted full screen grid settings. I end up with nice sqaure tiles, and can see the complete horizontal range of a 2x2 map, and about half of the vertical, the problem with it though is it makes DF run much slower, compared to normal settings.

I am using a tileset, that actually isn't that much of a difference to the default one (all it has is diagonal walls, which look awesome)

i was SO glad, when i finally had actual squares! *searches*

I believe it was Tahins 16x16 Tileset. I can't be totally sure since i am at work right now

You guys have already looked at the wiki I would guess. Makign the game properly display square tiles can be tricky.

I myself use Plac1d's rectangular tile/graphics set, and he posts several helpful resolutions and grid sizes to match his sets.

Maybe if you could take a look at his tips (http://dwarf.lendemaindeveille.com/index.php/User:Plac1d, scroll to bottom), you can figure out how to change your 'init' to match your own preferences.

The default tileset is 9x12, so you'll get rectangles. The wiki, though, has plenty of square tilesets, from 6x6 or so up to 20x20.

It lies in the grid settings. Also, don't use the title screen as the judge for the playing area, actualy load up a fort to see what it looks like. Though with getting it square, you may have it not fill up the top and bottom completly, just adjust the grid settings till you find a setting you like. Along with different tilesets, some will look better than others after adjusting the grid sizes.

What tileset do you want to use and what is your resolution on your screen?  With that, we can tell you what you want to change your grid and resolution numbers to in your init.

For example.  Playing on a 1920x1200 resolution with a 16x16 tileset, your grid will be 120 75.  Which is simply Resolution / Tile Size.  If you are getting a decimal answer when you are figuring the grid size, you simply have to lower your resolution until you find out that fills completely or enable BLANK_SPACE.

If you've got an older laptop, with, say, a 1024x768 screen, you cannot use 16x16 tilesets.

Like ever.

The default grid size is the minimum, and you just can't fit that many 16x16 tiles on the board. I've tried it, and it winds up looking pretty weird when they get distorted like that.

There are, however, smaller tilesets available, although the popular ones tend to be 16x16.

Let's see...I'm at 1680x1050. Haven't really got a tileset in mind. Something similar to the default one, probably. I'm not going to use any of the graphics packs or anything.
