[40d] Cats don't need males?
« on: January 25, 2009, 11:26:15 pm »

I have one female cat in the fortress, no males. It just gave birth to three kittens, all female.

I fear cats have become parthenogenetic, spelling doom to us all.

That, or it managed to mate with a caged male cat in a caravan, but shouldn't that not happen either?

I think it's possible for animals you get from immigrants or traders to already be pregnant. Once I embarked and one of the wagon pullers gave birth despite not having anything to mate with.

I brought this one at embark for vermin control. If it was already pregnant, it had a record-setting gestation.

that is why taking a kitten is better. :D

Kittens are cute and console your miserable 7 as they are sleeping on rocks and so.
