Reasons why you love this game
« on: January 25, 2009, 04:35:15 am »

Oh god, I just had this goblin siege and they whooped almost half of my soldiers, when suddenly my Champion came around the corner and started murdering the goblins left. But pityful enough he got pushed into the small pond right at the entrance of my fort. While he was there he heard the noise of a floodgate opening and while he was being flushed out of the pond he insisted that he had to kill 2 more goblins who've also fallen into the water while it's 5/7 deep.

He got out, walked to the entrance again and started mopping the floor again.

Personally, I am loving the detail that has gone into the game. The mechanics and fluids simulation is one of my favorite features. I have been annoyed by how unreliable my military can be, along with the crazy stopping power of traps. So I decided to make things a bit complex and deadly.

My new favorite defensive measure: The Clockwork Drowning Chamber! Kill goblins without ever issuing a "Pull the Lever!" command or stationing a squad nearby. This prototype took nearly four years to complete, and another year of waiting for a siege to show up. It isn't perfect, but I think it shows promise.

See the movie of my prototype here. http://mkv25.net/dfma/movie-1064

Greetings!

For me, it is also the detail, especially concerning the dwarven personalities, relationships and creativity. Seeing how the dramas of life between the dwarves play out is one favorite of mine. The other is definitely having dwarves create history engravings - what will they engrave, and how will they entitle it?

The unexpectedness caused by that detail is really something I enjoy. It is not mere randomness, but there are patterns and rules behind these things, so they actually make sense.

I love how this game gives you a set of tools and then allows you to create whatever you can imagine with them. Having just a set of tools would be boring, so the game also gives you reasons to use those tools. Goblin death traps, needlessly complicated mechanical contraptions, humongous mega projects.

Also, the procedural generated content of the game. Like looking through legends and finding the last member of a dwarven civilization absolutely destroying all sieges, and then being able to meet the guy in adventure mode. Cool stuff like that.

I can do this in the game:

Build giant construct that keeps water and has retractable bottom.
Build this a few levels up in the air (supported in edges).
Tie kittens in a rope under construct.
Release massive amounts of water.
Kittens get wet.

Thus, I love the game.

But I WOULD like to have military that doesn't dual wield socks and skips their crossbow training.

I'm in the sock industry, more manly than the food industry ( socks been known to kill the immortal ) , I get two items pair cloth, thus if the cloth is enhanced, I'll get twice the pay, and half the waste/work.

And I've been learning a few things ( four way automated drowneries ) from others maps, like the Bridge Fall Arena, I've even learned how to make sporting events for these fuckers, the Cat Dash, they dash for the three chained cats, that don't kill them.

Oh, and the food industry is easy, steal from the elves, then use the dropped food to make delicacies.

More ways to kill your foes than Dead Rising.

Shit so I guess I should be scared of socks from now on..

I love this game because its ASCII and I can use my imagination to draw what I think my giant tower should look like, not what the developers want the world to look like. I also love how I can build WHATEVER I want. I can have a wall 1 floor or 15 floors high, I can have the entrance be a small tunnel with turns for my swordsdwarves or it can be a few steps down into the center of a bustling fortress with guard towers all around.

So many reasons:

The detail that the game currently has is amazing. Not to mention the fact that detail is still being added. I can't wait until the next release comes. Contact poisions... Do you think lead poisoning will be in there? =)

The infinite replay potential of the game, You have the ability to make the game easier, harder, more insane, just by imposing rules on yourself, or embarking in different areas. Tired of the same old areas? Just create a map with insane features!

The megaprojects! A game where you can strive to make something huge, insanely difficult, and completely awesome is an aspect that will never let my games get boring.

The community. I have to admit, that if it were not for the forums here I might not have gotten interested in the game at all. I enjoy a good ascii game, but starting up such an indepth game seemed like a bad idea as I was busy with classes back then. That was until I visited this forum and found the community fortresses, the challenges, and the general enthusiasum, I had to try it. I found the time to play.

Well, I love the game, the options, infinite variety, and consistent updates. The military and the gui drive me mad, but they are relatively small issues as I consider a large portion of the fun to create large, overly complex death traps. Mostly I love the community involvement.

If I had just played the game, I would never have logged as many hours as I have. Seeing as how I can read about all these zany, murderous ideas of yours then it keeps me going, even when I do lose that legendary armourcrafter to fell dwarf. Its your (yes, YOUR) love for this game, and creativity and ingenuity which keeps me coming back. Its a good game, nay, GREAT GAME, however without the community it would not be quite as epic, because I would never have realized its full potential as the ultimate sandbox.

1. Ultimate Sandbox
2. Zaniness
3. The unlimited potential for growth, creativity, and murderous death traps spawned from the depths of the abyss (aka this communities minds)

Also, baiting my traps with kittens(heh, meow...)

I love this game because of the details, and it's amusing glitches. It is also the only ASCII game to ever freeze my computer. I managed this when I Drained the Ocean. Why drain the ocean? To built Sea Lab, of course.

In an era when Crytech engine graphics conceal terrible games, Dwarf fortress is a refreshing change. Non-existent graphics and a truly wonderful game

I concur with just about everyone above concerning detail, open/emergent gameplay, originality, etc., but I'd also like to add that this game caused me to actually LEARN about things.

If it weren't for DF's fortress industries and things it's caused me to look up, I wouldn't know a third of what I know now about things like geology, glassmaking, and metallurgy... which isn't to say I know all that much, but I'd definitely know less than I do now.

Because of the stupid, yet intelligent dwarves, the giant terrifying creatures, the elves that I love to hate and the sheer amount of stuff to see, do and create.

Greetings!

For me, it is also the detail..

Yeah, same here. Diversity & fantastic gameplay are the most important factors to me. I don't really care about gfx/sound.  :)
