I am supportive of display stands other than dumping and forbidding in a spot or stockpiles-in-room. I would love customizing rooms of Very Important Dwarves with objects that they love, and decorating barracks and dungeons and such similarly.

About decorative quality, I think that value as it is currently handled is just fine. Maybe those =grates= have that extra level of detail and craftsmanship, like fine, authentic, Amish wooden furniture. If you have access to Antiques Roadshow, see how much Dutch colonial furniture for a century or so ago goes for. There is artistic value that is just worked into the overall value of the product, even if =cabinet= holds the same out of socks as -cabinet-.

I like to think that no-modifier furniture and crafts are the baseline. Anything above that is superior quality, just by varying degrees. McDonalds would put no-modifier chairs and tables in, while your local casino would shell out for exceptional and masterworks in their grand dining halls.

I like large amounts of utilitarian furniture, and a few awesome piece to go where I want the awesome stuff. New immigrants become dabbling masons and glassmakers just for that purpose. I want 100 doors, and I want them all the same!

A stand could be a explicity made furniture item much like the Armor and Weapon stand or it could be created by using a special menu option to place placing a block of any type which becomes quasi-furniture (I think we should be able to use blocks in this way for tables, chairs and a few other uses, naturally the blocks give mild unhappy thoughts).  You can then link mechanisms to the stand to 'trapify' the stand, it will act like a pressure plate but responds to the item on the stand, any item will trigger the on state and the absence of any item causes the off state.  A common theif will be fooled by the stand and just grab the item triggering it.  But a Master thief will try to put a bag of sand or some other convenient object on the stand and this will have a chance to fool the trap.

Except there's something wrong when the mechanisms you build are better at decoration than things actually made for decoration.

I don't really think so. http://www.ericfreitas.com/gallery.php Check out his mechanical stuff. I'd much rather have a clock like that than any sort of chair or static sculpture, no matter how opulent.
