XKCD has more jokes I don't understand than any other comic.



That's not saying much, considering I only read XKCD and MTTS. I used to read Penny Arcade, until I realized I got like 2% of the jokes on account of not playing any of the games.

With regards to the control group joke,

there would have been at least 30 members of each control group, as this is the minimum number required for the sample average (i.e. the quality of sex with the people in each group) to agree to the population average (the quality of sex with all possible people on earth that match the requirements of the group) to within one standard deviation (<5%). Of course, this is assuming a normal distribution in sex quality (a bell shape curve), however this is a reasonable assumption in most systems.

Addendum; I feel I should point out at this point that the population average is what you want to know, but short of measuring every single person in existance, it is impossible to ever perfectly determine it. As such, you measure a smaller group of people, the sample. However, because the sample is just a random selection, it may have an average that differs from that of the population. However, statistical mathematics has shown that should more than 30 points of interest be sampled, the resulting data should be within 5% of the pop average for a normally distributed system.
