Flies in the ointment
« on: January 24, 2009, 03:11:41 am »

Ok, not ointment. Magma.
I was filling my magma chamber, just a set up to move magma from one corner of the map to the other, where my fortress is being built. The fort is underwater, and at the moment it is 500 steps to the surface from where this picture is taken. So imagine my surprise when I see This:

 What...the...Hell?

Short lived race, that's for damn sure

Mmm...well, I'm running vanilla, so that can't be it.

It might be because once stone melts, it turns into a puddle like spilled water, booze, vomit, or blood. If experience is any indicator, uncleaned "messes" of this type cause flies to show up. This would seem to include molten rock.

I imagine that whatever kinds of flies lay eggs in puddles of molten rock must have some pretty badass looking maggots.

There are three things I know about dwarves:
1. They've got beards. Even the women.
2. They're short. Especially the women.
3. They're Scottish.

I find I get several swarms of flies whilst I am draining my incinerator.

The room is simply a 5x5 chamber sealed with nickel floodgates and in the middle a nickel floor hatch. I have the room designated as my 'dump' so that I can throw all my goblins/other crap in there. I then flood in the magma and wait till only metal is left. After this I drain the magma out through the hole.
Then the flies appear. In several swarms. Very odd...

Perhaps we should drop the boiling temp of flies some?  I mean, they are annoying, and even more so when they are EATING FRESHLY MOLTEN ROCK, I presume.
