On the subject of song "descriptions"; use the Announcements page.

"The Jagged Rhymes begin playing a [adjective] tune. Kikrost McVocalist sings about [verb]ing and [noun]s. The song is [quality]."

For single playing on breaks;

"Urist McSoloist begins playing a [adjective] tune. The song is [quality]."

Militant music--songs sung during battle, about battle, after battle. High quality military music might give dwarfs a morale boost, for the Army Arc.

Ofcourse, singing songs can also give away your unit's location...so it wouldn't be useful in every situation.

Songs of grief, aka durges, seem appropriately "dwarfy".
Berserk dwarfs might also begin to sing. Possibly a "death-song"?

Dwarfs might compose songs for other dwarfs, either as tribute, as part of a mating ritual (serenading each other), or songs of grief, about a loved one or a hero's passing.

Rich dwarfs/Nobles might hire other dwarfs to perform.
"Street musician" type dwarfs (and other species) might earn money by donation from passers-by.

Work songs have an extremely long history with humans, and I think dwarfs should have them.

Dwarfs might make music with tools (hammers and such), as well as specific "musical instruments".
Artifacts could occasionally sing
(the Singing Sword?)

Dwarfs might have certain songs they sing during specific holidays (Christmas music, anyone? Auld Lang Sine?)

Sometimes, these could be military music (4th of July), while other holidays could be more peaceful.

Singing/Music might also be used during various rituals, magical or otherwise. Artifact songs might be magical.

There might be times and places where singing is inappropriate (at night, while other dwarfs are sleeping).

Dwarfs might have specific songs that are their favorites. Others they dislike.

Songs could be traded between species, and altered, to fit a different species' sensibilities and values. Songs could just change, over time.

Dwarfs could be very aware of acoustics, due to their architectural knowledge, and living underground. Songs might be of "higher quality" in a place with great acoustics.

Sound could be a weapon (Foa's banshees, also sonic breath?).

Dwarves are so going to invent heavy metal.

The Iron Cage begin playing a song about Running and Hills.

Really? Nobody made the joke yet? Alright, I'll take one for the team.

SO, I imagine that dwarves would be into ROCK music. *rimshot*

Dwarven music is a scandalously underdeveloped theme. Rock, metal, techno and industrial would all be great fits, if not for their name, then for their battletrance-like enjoyment. Headbanging midgets in the mosh pit ftw. Possibly organ music too, would sound nice in the dwarven halls and it requires a huge apparatus. Maybe bells for children, since they require quite some skill in metalworking.

I don't really agree with any resident bands playing all day
Why can this not happen?  It makes sense.  It happens in real life, too.  There were royal fanfare people, you know?  Practiced all the time (well not literally, just an expression).

Alternately: The Brick Testament. It's a really fun look at what the bible would look like if interpreted literally. With Legos.

I like this idea. Any chance of getting rid of unemployment is a good one. However, the Build Instruments command may have to be reworked

Expanding the idea, you could also have Storytellers, Jesters, and other entertainer along side the Bards. It would give a use to those social skills.

Bells wouldn't just be for children, either.

You could have a massive bell in your fortress, or a set of them. Could be used for telling time, "to ring out a warning", or just for playing music on.

A carillon would certainly be possible, but I'm trying to stick to a racial style preference (grave and moody for dwarves). Bells, harps and flutes would be more elvish. Which makes bells a good trade good for dealing with elves, etc.

You've never read "For whom the bell tolls", I assume.

Hint: It tolls for thee.

Ah, you're right, size matters. Huge gongs would be similar in style too.

Bells/gongs could be linked to a meeting area or a new designation of "panic zone", and ringing it would cause all dwarves in a category (All/all indoors/all outdoors, subcategory all/civilian/military) to go there. This could be a great way to implement evacuation signals, shelter signals, etc.

Other ways to implement this might be smoke signals (outdoors only), horn instruments, or whistles. Shouting towers might be a bit much, since non-instrumental orders are assumed to be given via shouting.

This is a superior dwarven song. All penmanship is of the highest quality.
It is studded with Mad Beat, encircled with Dope Melody and decorated with Smooth Rhymes.
This object menaces with spikes of Pitch and Harmony.
