Can you get non-dwarven immigrants?
« on: January 23, 2009, 12:52:19 am »

I'm just wondering because I've got a dwarf civilization that is primarily (80% in all sites) composed of Goblins.  Will I get any goblin immigrants?

Also that civ has a Goblin queen so when a Fort got big enough for the king/queen to show up would it be that goblin queen or a dwarf with her name?

as far as i know you should only recieve dwarf immigrants despite the overwhelming goblin population amoung your parent civs. however i can see this changing in the future.

It is, as yet, absolutely impossible to get immigrants other than dwarves.  Even if you did, the game partially determines controllability by a creature's race anyway, so if you did have non-dwarves living on your site, they're just listed as "Friendly" an will mill about randomly.

It's an oft suggested feature, and Toady certainly plans to implement it, but not any time in the near future.

Hopefully in the future we can code in racism to avoid the conquered civ ending up dominating it's conquerors from the inside. Otherwise the immortal races will invariably overtake races that die of old age

I know what you were getting at, and I kind of agree that it's a good feature, but...
..I'm not sure how to feel about that.

Technically the conquered dominating the conqueror has a lot of historical precedent.  The Chinese, for example, had several dynasties in which they were ruled by foreign powers, but they still massively outnumbered and eventually "outcultured" their conquerors, more or less turning them into Chinese rather than Mongols or Manchus or whathaveyou doing the opposite.

Getting back to point, I don't mind the mixed civs so much, but getting appropriate migrants would be cool, just for the fact that you could abuse the crap out of elven speed if you recieved some elf migrants and made them soldiers.

Elves in Steel or Adamantine Plate wielding REAL weapons = Silmarillion elves, and those guys were not to be trifled with.

The Mongols took over China which was then followed by the Chinese immigrating to Mongolia and displacing the original populace entirely? Well, that's peculiar

I really can't see elves giving up their way of life just because dwarves conquered their last retreat nor can I see dwarves forgiving them that time they ate their king because he had a few trees cut. With such fundamentally different practices between species I don't think such a peace is very realistic

Sometimes racism has kept the conquered from dominating the conqueror.  I was specifically thinking of the Spartans, whose slaves vastly outnumbered them (something like 15:1 IIRC).  They had to make themselves into incredibly fierce warriors because they were so afraid of a slave revolt.

Their social changes would make integration difficult, unless a creature which was raised by another race has the same sort of civ tags?

In the elf example, elves in DF don't seem to mind eating sentient creatures at all. This would make any form of long term integration with another race pretty difficult, because most of them tend to have that as unthinkable.

And yeah! You can get king/queens of another race if they happened to have been genned that way. I've seen liasons be a variety of races. Its particularly fun if you randomly are one of the people who get a goblin caravan, because I've never seen a goblin caravan actually contain only goblins.

I was more referring to the fact that even though the Mongols conquered China, they were still vastly outnumbered by Han Chinese, and eventually were forced to integrate into Chinese culture rather than Chinese adapting to Mongolian culture.  Mongolia still follows the Mongolian way as far as I know, partly thanks to their nomadic traditions and such.  It's not exactly relevant to the "dwarven civ dominated by a goblin populace" situation, but it's similar to the times when a dwarven civ has a king or queen who is not a dwarf.

On another note, setting dwarven civs to elect military leaders (as the humans and goblins do) instead of the pansy civilian nobles would fit the Spartan comparison fairly well, and help to alleviate the uselessness of nobles in general.

It's like having a fortress guard which sets and enforces its own mandates!

Goblin Kings are possible.

Ooh. I want one of those for my crazy mechanical deathtrap of a labyrinth around my fortress.
Miasma Pit shall now be known as the Bog of Eternal Stench.

Heh, would be cool to have some more wealthy dwarves migrating to your fort with a couple slaves that do all their work for them.

They do. They are called Nobles.
