Magma questions

I'm trying to make a magma reservoir, and I want to make sure that no imps get into it. I'm hoping to install some grates to keep the critters out. Will a green Glass grate melt or not?

Grates don't melt, cus they aren't actually in contact with the magma. So it should work.

The only materials which are definitely magma-proof are adamantine, steel, and bauxite.  Iron may also be magma-safe, but I've never tried it.

Alternatively, you can build a fortification out of any material (even wood!), or carve one out of existing rock, and use it as a grate.  Magma cannot destroy walls or similar structures, so it will work as a filter and keep out all of the critters while letting the magma through.

I'm not sure about that. I've had Imps get into my secure forge areas before, that were sealed by a fortification. A guard jumped into the magma and killed the thing (never got the mediocore armor back though).

Iron's magma proof, as is nickel and nickel silver. What works better is if you can build vertical bars and dig a channel near the magma, and flooring off the channel if necessary.

Hmm, I guess that botches that idea, then. 

What you could do, if you don't mind collapsing a floor or two, is just collapse the floor above the magma pipe into the pipe itself.  The knockout dust will incapacitate all of the beasties, causing them to fall to the bottom and despawn forever (or until you reclaim).  And since I doubt the floor above the pipe is made of magma-safe materials, it will quickly melt, thus allowing you to enjoy your magma reservoir.

It's a bug actually.  Fortifications should stop creatures, but if a creature is in a flowing liquid and run up against a fortification, they can glitch through it following the liquid flow.

Yeah I discovered that the 'fun' way when my legendary smiths came running into the heart of the fortress, imps in tow setting the whole place on fire, the lever locking everyone in surrounded by inferno. I use profit's method of using the pump to filter out all the nasties or just use the workshops to plug the hole. It seems more badass to have open holes of magma though.

Well that explains why I get the very occasional fire imp managing to sneak into my fortress. But hey, I like the odd death to keep things interesting...

Actually, glass furniture and blocks (but not toys, instruments and crafts) have been proven to be magma proof.  I have used iron myself as well.

Where's that thread where Magua tested the glass-in-magma question?  That ought to be sticked

Just build a large channel going from magma to you-- it should be enough so that the imps will stay in the magma pipe. Its worked for me

This. Imps will not follow long channels. I'm not sure (As this is hard to test), but I think that if you only channel out tiles that will be completely covered by the magma buildings (Each building has a couple of tiles that block movement as part of it) they can't escape the magma flow either, but this doesn't help with open-air magma used for dumping.
