New Version: Privateer ASCII Sector.
« on: January 22, 2009, 07:08:32 am »

I just thought to check up on this WIP sci-fi roguelike, and it turns out the latest version was released January 16th!  Great!  I haven't played it in a while, let's see what's new!

Someone made a PRIVATEER rogue-like ?  :o

That's just far too awesome to be true.

Well I'll assume that my bringing it to your attention makes me awesome by extension and thank you.  Thanks.

Wow, I saw this project before but I thought that it uses ascii to simulate "view from cabin" graphics, but now I expected it closer and it's a real roguelike! I'm gonna try it! 4x-style trading and combat, landing on planets and walking inside of stations... This should be fun!

I appreciate the work that's gone into this project, but I've kind of always wondered what the difference is between this and the dozens of other "Elite/Privateer" clones out there (including elite), other than the ascii graphics.

I mean I could just go play Space Rangers 2 and get the same thing + much more, right?

I thought that too, which is why I kind of steered away from it. That sort of view doesn't sound appealing for long. I haven't played in ages, never got far, maybe I'll do better now!

Only if you're the sort of discerning gent that wouldn't play Angband because NetHack exists, or vice versa. Privateer (now) features some level of on-foot exploration and fighting, but I haven't tried the new version to see what extent, so that separates it from SR2 as well.

And the combat in this real time with a level of twitch and such, while SR2 is sort of... click to decide who to attack and wait, Infinity Engine style, I believe? Might be worth a try for the differences.

Also, glorious ASCII!

SR2 is turn based, but everything moves at the same time.  In other words, you choose your actions, firing missiles or whatever, you do them, the universe unfreezes and stuff happens.  Then after that action is complete, the universe freezes again.  At least I think that's how it works.  I actually haven't played it in a long time.  I ought to buy it again from Stardock where I can get the expansion too.

SR2 is fun but it's very "fancy looking" (almost cartoonish). Mind you, I love it, but for me there's a big difference between it and space simulators. That's why ascii sector may appear good for me. It all depends on the personal taste.

Personally SR2 is more complete at this moment, and has more features.

But let us not derail this further.

More complete than what? Do you tell me that a commercial project which consists of space exploration simulation, text quest, strategy and a hell lot of other genres and also has the number "2" in it's name while being developed by a nice and creative quite reknown company is more complete than an occasional indie ascii game in alpha stage? Wow, you've found an America, sir :).

I meant that SR2 is cool but not the thing I'm looking for. I've spent a lot of time in it but I eager for more. You know, insatiable hunger :).

2Ioric Kittencuddler:
Try to get the "reloaded" version of SR2. It doesn't totally change the game but it has nice community-suggested interface improvements and some "winners" from text quest contest. In general it adds a lot.

P.S. If you're interested in facts, I've found some. Sorry for bad translation if it matters (I read it from russian game magazine):

1) 20+ new text quests
2) 27 new planetary maps (I don't usually play strategy in SR but someone may like it)
3) New types of quests from governments
4) New unique and casual gear and ship hulls. Gear can get "+" to some attribute like "missile launcher *** +15 rocket damage" or "shield generator *** + 5 droid repair value" etc.
5) You can now play text quests or planetary battles without starting a game (for those who like minigames).
6) Expanded cargo and information center interface.
7) ~10 new hyperspace maps (for minigames between jumps).

I must add that one of the most important features in Reloaded for me is the greatly expanded search function. Now you can find almost any component you want to find throughout all galaxy shops via the search function. Same for the known ships.

Is it fun to quote yourself? You could bold the text in the original sentence. Also, I don't think that any indie project can come even close to SR2 (well, except DF and some other ambitious ones).

I've always really wanted to love ASCII Sector but the problem for me is that it has always ran too slow.  Slower than DF!  Any suggestions on this?  By slow, I mean it seems like anywhere between 5-10 FPS at most, with keyboard command delays when walking (not so much in space though).

It seems to help immensely to run it in full screen, for me.
