Need challenge
« on: January 22, 2009, 07:05:01 am »

I've stopped playing DF a while ago because I found it boring after some moment. I've got a well-maintained fortress with rather large military (I decided to make my dwarves melee fighters, since crossbowdwarves/traps are too powerful.

There is no flux on the map, and my dwarf civilization only has access to one type, so I'm held at 4 steel bars per year, which is bad. Got plenty of iron melted from goblins' armor though.

But I think it's just too easy. The sieges are rare and mostly they are not of much trouble. I've created a water supply system, so the dwarves are washed by a waterfall each time they pass the main corridor, but it's finished and working like a charm now.

What I need now, is some challenge. Something that make the game more interesting for me.
I've read the dedicated wiki page, but the challenges presented there didn't satisfy me. They either suggest artificial limits on certain production, or an unfriendly neighbourhood, and I don't quite like it.

My imagination isn't very fruitful, so I ask you to help me invent some new and amazing mega-task, either for my current fortress or for a new one.

Thanks in advance :)

Hmm, haunted glacier close to goblin fort with nothing but farmers/brewers and wrestlers?

It will be a 'survival horror' fortress for sure, but I don't like it. I'd like the fortress to have a PURPOSE. A PROJECT to accomplish. Hopefully, also the interesiting one: producing 10000 plump helmets or 100 gem windows isn't much of a fun.

Make a giant statue of you... I mean GIANT so that there's nothing else in the whole friggin map... And make the statue the fort so all the dorfs live inside you... Just imagine dozens of dead drunk dwarves running inside you all the time...  ;D
Then add waterfalls from your nose etc...

I agree. I love this game and have been playing it for a while. Learning all the steps through trial and error was fun, but once one can get a stable fortress and get their systems up and running the game starts to lose focus. That would be my only cringe with the game. Open ended games loose too much focus. It would be nice to have an actual in game focus to work towards. I enjoy games for the sense of achievement i get form accomplishments. Once all the systems are worked out e.g. - food, drink, military, trading, the game needs a reason to build these systems. I want a reason to build these systems up, an end game to work towards. Most fortresses i build tend to fizzle out after a while. Once they are self sustaining, there is not much point the game. I know a lot of people love to tinker and mess with their dwarves (kind of like using the natural disasters in Simcity) but there need to be more game achievements.
I don't mean to be critical, i really do hold a special place in my heart for this game, it's just that i find myself playing it less and less.

Once I was doing similar thing. I decided to create the Capitol Dwarf City with a whole level dedicated to the king and his court. There were wide electrum-and-steel-padded corridors, electrum rooms with gold & platinum furniture and gem windows, glass statues everywhere etc etc. Took me many years to do it. When it was close to the finish the fortress was lost to a PC accident, but I didn't really care then, since it became boring too.

take away the goblin snatcher tag and play with a mod that adds many races (legendary, for example)
you should get sieges in the first winter!
That should make it harder...

Mod the game to create new creatures, delete others, introduce more belligerent civs so you can get sieged more often, etc. Delete plump hemets(sp?)! Find a landscape to recreate (real or fantasy)
And wait until giant earthworms are introduced :O

Two suggestions:
Orc mod without traps or ranged weapons. Just surviving is a huge challenge. If you want to mod them to be immune to traps which will allow you to use cage traps for wildlife.

Terrifying glacier with no aquifer or magma. Again, surviving is a challenge. You will have to import all booze and will have to rely on breeding animals for food.

In both cases try to live long enough to get a noble.

I'm trying an interesting challenge at the moment. Find a coastal area with an island that allows you to see both the island and the mainland within the same fortress area. Build a giant bridge spanning the two. You get both an ocean challenge (salt water) and a megaproject.

Other interesting challenge you could try. Mod a race so that it can't speak. This has the interesting effect of preventing you from assigning them jobs, so your immigrants are going to only do whatever it is they know how. It also has some effects on trade and whatnot. I ran across this effect while doing some testing. Didn't stick around with it to really try it out yet, though.

Hello!

Okay, right now, I can't check this on the computer I have DF installed on, so I can't verify whether this is possible and works as intended - but if it does, it might be the kind of challenge you had mind:

Gen a world where all dwarven civs got extinct (if you are interested, I can help searching for that).

Unless I am mistaken, even if the dwarven civs are extinct, you should be able to play fortress mode, using dwarves from one of the former civs.

Again, unless I am mistaken, you shouldn't see any regular immigration under such circumstances.

If the above things work as I think they do, you could then play this as the "Return of the Dwarves" challenge. As your 7 are the sole survivors of the dwarven race, you need to bolster up their defenses and turn the fortress into the source of the new dwarven civilization with a population of over 100 dwarves.

If you want it to be really nasty, choose a site with goblins nearby (uppermost slot). As you will take a long time to reach siege size, you will be constantly attacked by ambushers.

I am sorry for being so vague about whether this is actually possible without modding, but I wanted to share this idea and it will be a while before I can check it (and the wiki has no real information on this).

This is quite doable. Read the link, as it's a very good story by Jamini that uses this. And, no, it doesn't require any modding to pull off.

Thank you all for your suggestions.
I like the 'sole dwarves' idea, and also the 'giant bridge' one. But I didn't not yet decide, so please keep suggesting :)

As you, probably, already noticed, I'm more inclined to peaceful gameplay than to survival madness that happen on a haunted glacier with a gobling tower. Especially since Toady is going to improve control over the military, which is rather burdensome now.
