I think I'm kind of a yes and no.  I descovered it back in 2D.  But I only discovered the ‼HFS‼ and not the $HFS$.  Thinking the ‼HFS‼ was the HFS the forum talked about I no longer worried about looking it up.  After that the rest was spoiled.

I woulda been spoiled eventually anyway, I just couldn't keep my nose out of the raws.

Is there a tag in the tentacle demon's raw that makes engravings say that? Because I can't find it.

It has to do with the [SPHERE:DEPRAVITY] and [SPHERE:THRALLDOM] tags.

The first time I struck adamantium, I was estatic. Mined some out and got my DM to forge a masterwork sword and boots. Then we breached the pits and the spirits of fire slowly worked through the fort, systematically killing everyone. I think my two favorite dwarves were the last ones to die.

Considering that my introduction to this game was spending a couple of weeks reading some of the more legendary stories which ended with the locating of HFS, I say I spoiled it before I even made the decision to install the game.

I don't use the site finder often, so underground pools, magma, etc generally remain hidden for my forts. They tend to die first time I get annoyed at a dwarf and execute him, resulting in a tantrum spiral.

I "spoiled" it for myself by reading up half the articles on the wiki. I haven't come across it yet though. By the way, what does HFS stand for? I searched it up on Urban Dictionary and all it said was "Holy fu*bleep*ing sh*bleep*t" Is that what it stands for DF wise, too?

I did read the wiki article on it, but kind of expected that that kind of thing could happen.  I've always been paranoid about digging too deep because I've read the lord of the rings a few too many times.

 I knew there were demons that would show up at some point after you got Adamantine. Of course, I didn't know that it was in my embark area, or that they came from inside the adamantine. Or that they started in ambush mode. It ended with me sending all my dwarves to the tree farm area between my two moats. Which would've worked great on things that weren't Spirits of Fire.

All burned. And such did I keep that world, so that one day I could go back and destroy the evil!

Can't say that I have deliberatly looked up HFS on the forums or the wiki but it is sometimes mentioned on the forums: shame on you who do.

I usually embark on forested areas but I will ocasionally find some mountains to make a home in. Anyway I've sorta got an idea of HFS is and I once even fought a demon leader in a gobo fort with an elf adventurer, I did not last very long.

Had my first HFS today, witch lead to my quick end.

A single deamon came out and killed 7 miners that where around, getting the funny blue stuff (you know what I mean) and then got killed by my 20 military dwarfs (my pop was around 120 dwarfs).

I thought "okay, thats it" and started mining again when all of a sudden 6 tentacle deamons poped out and shortly after started to violate evry single dwarfs in my fort, I recuited all my dwarfs told them to grap one of the many many many weapons I had lieing around - they however choose to rush down unarmed and unarmored :I.

Needless to say nearly all died.

I returned to the fort later as adventuer (mainly to grab that ada. Axe i made) and found a constant stream of "XXX slams into a obstacle" messages.

As I approched my old fort I saw that on the highest tower I build there where several Deamons on it and a constant stream of dwarfs/elves/humans walking up on it and trying to jump from the top while the deamons pushed them around.

A fight with the deamon resulted in many things found in there tentacles attacking me from socks to shields, they slammed evrything in me, while I threw ballista arrows at them that I found lieing around.

made a map just for that, found adamantine, looked around til i found "it". Not what i was expecting at all (played with LL, so many prisoners!!), and i got horribly crushed (and it was kinda funny too.. i felt like i was playing as gobos)
I spoil it now, so that next time it doesnt ruin my next big project before im done ( i wanna create a big underground city with "it" under a temple/tombs). Now i know what to expect, so i can better use it.

Yes, I had issues with all sorts of things with my first fort and took to the wiki to read up on everything. I saw the HFS labels and had no idea what it was and so looked it up. Well worth it.

My first actual experience with it in a fortress was a planned fortress of doom in an attempt to slay Ender goblins from the 'Better goblin mod'. I had about 40 dwarves and capped it at that. Of my original seven five were miners and once they were super-legendary in mining from carving out the entire fortress I trained them up to legendary in pump operating.

Keep in mind my goal was to kill Ender goblins, not demons, but I figured they'd make good practice, and I knew only adamantine would be able to do proper damage to Enders. I embarked basically on top of the adamantine and mined out nearly all of it before breaching. I had a legendary armorer and weaponsmith as well as five artifact adamantine swords and full adamantine plate for my five heroes.

When I breached those five easily slaughtered their way through the demons, though the room itself was quite spectacular. The presence and amount of adamantine make the challenge reasonable unless you breach the pits by accident. I consider it both fun and amusing but not the end-all of the game. Besides, with mods and new metals there is more variety so it doesn't go from 160% steel damage to 500% adamantine.

As a side note, I later took an adventurer to said fortress to obtain the weapons and armor and did in fact make my way to an Ender goblin dark fortress and slaughtered my way through it. .... with liberal save-scumming, of course. Normally I consider that not very fun, but with Enders... there is no other way.

Darn fireballs.
 

Like someone said though, it's not knowing when you'll run into things that you may (or may not) know are there that makes life interesting.
