my vision on the matter is:
elemental spirits are sapient/animalistic manifestations of a magical sphere,
elemental men are like golem - created by magic rather than built though.

a spirit can take any shape it wishes, while the artificial versions are stuck in the form dictated at their creation.
I'd say powerlevel/size would also be an issue in the shape/size it could take.

Well that is my vision, in DF shape and size are fixed in the RAWs. :)

By the way, according to kabbalah, you can either make a golem out of clay, because man was made from clay, or you can make a golem out of air, because life was breathed into us.  Water and fire are evoked as part of the ritual, but you never end up with a water golem or fire golem.  Go figure.

That's not to say magical constructs of fire or water can't be made by wizards, but if we're talking Jewish Golems, you're exclusively dealing with clay or air.  (Unless someone can find me a source I've overlooked)

Here's a somewhat whimsical and overly simplistic explanation.

Gonna crosspost this year, though I'm sure a lot of the more dedicated gents in this topic know all of this stuff already. I compiled a list of the new features and changes the next version will have. I tried my best to grab the info from the devlog, this very thread, as well as the podcasts.

It's probably not everything and it may contain mistakes, but this behemoth is 11 pages long and contains almost 5000 words. Yeah. This is going to be a gigantic release.

When'd this happen? This is could be great!

      • Batmen could ride giant bats and shoot poison darts at you with makeshift bloguns made from giant cave spider legs - whoa
...I thought Toady said that as a goal, not a this-version?

    Quote
"Solid breath can take the form of a forward moving dust puff that accidentally knocks people out due to some cave-in code.  When I fix that, KOs make or may not be a parameter.  Solid breath can also take the form of a solid glob (a small one right now) that is hurled like a stone.  It might as well be a thrown stone of the solid.  Solid breath can also be an undirected dust puff (also accidental knockouts)."

    This will be fun.

I believe that's referring to this: "I changed the att/skill display in adventure mode and dwarf mode to account for all the new atts, and added a bit of grouping to the list so you won't be overwhelmed by things like conversation skills."  And yes, it will be great.

There's a very good chance that the upcoming version will include some kind of primitive weapons and mounts, given that it was emphasized in the dev log and several FotF posts.  The thing about batmen/blowguns refers to an old feature that got removed (it's not clear whether that specific feature will return yet, hence SirPenguin's use of "could"):

The cave dwellers definitely need their own civ definitions (Req232) -- this is why we have batmen blowgunners that don't have blowguns!  They use to be able to shoot darts that were covered with giant cave spider venom, but they lost the items when the equipment functions became linked to civilizations a while ago.

I doubt Toady will provide a direct answer either way.

He mentioned the batmen thing twice in the podcasts. He mentioned how certain things like that existed in the 2D version, and now certain 2D features are coming back. Again, like a lot of things Toady says it's tough to infer what is planned and what is in the game

Well, the iphone could do it.

    Not even close, unfortunately.

DF is one of the more processor-intensive games in existence. No cellphone (or similar mobile device) has anything close to what's required to run it effectively.

The latest iPhone, as far as I can tell, has a 600 MHz ARM CPU and 256MB of RAM, and probably a bunch of other hardware limitations. This is even assuming DF could be rewritten for such a device in theory, which would take a lot of work.

This may have been asked before, and this may not be the right place to put it, but: If a dwarf (or any creature) has no teeth and no limbs, will the creature try to gum the enemy to death?

There is a creature in real life that has no teeth and it basically does JUST that to crush you to death.
