You guys need to remember to not count the blue one in the underground stuff since Toady said he could work on that indefinetly or something. At least its my opinion that we shouldn't count that one, unless Toady plans on greening it out just to finalize it for the release.

I KNOW that certain moths jam bat sonar by making noise.

While some bats jam insect's nervous systems by shrieking horribly. I'm not too sure on the specifics, but I'd guess it's something to do with overstimulating them with the sound. I'm very glad we can't hear any of this going on, or I'd probably never sleep again.

Remember that he also has to test for bugs and glitches.

My best guess is that a lot of the items are giving Toady quite a bit less trouble then even he thought they would.

Though I still wouldn't bet on a December release just yet. It would require nothing going wrong and taking an exceeding amount of time (or rather, nothing going wrong but finding out something will take more time then it would seem.)

I think so too. Even though I would very much like a release this year, a release next year with even more features would be much better. Stick as much of them in as the time allows!

What the... why?  It's not like there won't be more releases after the next one.  There's no external time constraint (other than donation levels waning if it takes too long), so "as time allows" is meaningless.  He's got all the time he wants and could just keep adding features indefinitely without releasing, but why should he do that?  Much better to wrap up the massive chunk of functionality he's been doing for the last year and a half, get that out the door without any more feature creep, and then move on to new things (starting with the already-identified next priorities, not with stuff suggested today in this thread).

slightly late on this, but I believe the main reason cooking food is the standard is that it rids the food of most bacterium and can help metabolize some poisons. Cooking is the application of heat to cause thermal decomposition, helping to break down the chains of amino acids etc.
It does not completely break them down as digestion does, but it weakens the bonds so as marginally less energy is required when eaten.
Most bacteria that cause food poisoning are killed by heat, so early hominids that cooked their food would, overall, have less food-induced poisoning than those that ate raw meat.
Poisons are complex protein chains, and ingested poisons must be hardy enough not to be broken down in digestion in order to enter the bloodstream and take effect, as cooking helps to break down these chains and render them more easily digestible, cooking can also help to make some inedible food safe to eat.

Mostly just GCSE biology stuff, quoted from my textbook and notes given by teachers.

I think what he means is although he would be overjoyed at an early release before 31st December, if it meant cutting out features and then rapidly adding them in come January, then he wouldn't mind waiting a little longer.

Besides I am sure the hype on the next release of Dwarf Fortress have already hit way beyond unobtainable levels.

So if he released it in December then he would be yelled at through the hollidays.

If you open up the spoilers to see the full list, the delayed/unfinished items look kind of like ornaments hanging on a tree.

Based on what I see as of this point, I'm expected a likely early to mid January release for the following reasons:

The Underground

Toady said he could go on forever with the underground yes, but what people keep forgetting is that he made mention that he would wrap it up in a week. Most likely meaning he's going to work on the underground stuff for this release and likely will work on more in future versions...

Overall, I'm going to say a week, maybe 9 days if he goes through complications.
Anticipated date of greening out: 22nd -24th of December

Rope Ladders for going into large underground spaces

This was on the list of "may not included for this version" and there could be a chance it can still be put in red for now. Though if Toady feels like it, he may just go ahead and cover it. Not sure how long it take, but if he were to do that, I say 2-3 days maybe 4 at most.

Anticipated date of being greened out: Giving into Christmas Eve and Day I expect it to be green on anywhere between 24th - 30th of December and this is only assuming he will do it!

Compacting issues

Toady explain this would take a few days to put together. So likely another 3-4 days for that.

The cat bug

Fixing it so our cats are no longer "too injured" to carry thier food. It could be as simple as slaping a [GRASP] tag. But at the same time it might be something completely different as one person pointed out. This could vary in length, but I expect somewhere between 5 minutes to 2-3 days for this.

Hydra Test

Making sure our hydras don't die after one head is lopped off. This could vary in days, but likely shouldn't take too long if my estimations are correct. 2-3 days possibly 4.

Any Remaining tests

This will likely take a while just as Toady explained. As this is the "bug testing session" to make sure nothing crashes or causes eternal torment for us. :P Will likely involve several fortress plays, adventure plays and arena plays in different regions to test out some of the chararistics and make sure all runs smoothly as the fortress develops. This could range from 2 -3 weeks likely, but then again it could be a whole lot quicker because... he may have been doing most of this testing all along then it'll likely be a week if nothing goes horribly wrong.

Handling misc bugs and interface reports

Likely most of the connections in any remaining test will likely come into this section as well so I say this section will be greening out along with any remaining tests. Probably add 3 -4 days to it if needed.

Merging 40d# material
We already know Toady spent 2 days getting the initial set up for this. But we have no idea how much testing will be invovled in it. Likely just making sure all the features work especially the .png function and zooming in with the wheel. Likely will be finished along with any remaining tests, otherwise, a day to 3 days.

Overall my anticipated date for the release is likely be set for anywhere between...

JANUARY 9TH to FEBUARY 8th this is based on if thing either go very successuful or alot of problems pop up.

Otherwise on the average standpoint, I'm anticipating DF's release is likely set for JANUARY 16th to JANUARY 23rd!

This is my perdiction for the DF release!
