Hahaha, so it's just Lancensis that's going insane, then.

Well it all depends how you make something.

Some weapons like Sharktooth swords were wooden swords that basically had Shark Teeth tied between two wooden planks or something like that.

So it wouldn't make Flint Axes impossible... though it wouldn't be very useful.

Most of the sharktooth swords I've seen in museums are like wooden spears, with the teeth attached in many rows on the sides. Those are usually from Polynesia, so maybe I'm thinking of something different.

As for flint axes, well, they worked well enough for pre-bronze age cultures. I imagine they would shatter easily, and would be harder to produce in quantities and keep sharpened, but they'd probably cut as well as most non-advanced metals. Obsidian of course can be made a great deal sharper than basically any real world metal, but I'm not sure if flint (or Chalcedony)  can.

Well it is an Axe, so if the Flint Axe can still bash people over the head it would still be useful.

As for Ivory if I were to guess the game probably treats it as Bone except it calls it "Ivory" it also may have different stats.

Well, ivory is basically the same as regular tooth, and therefore probably quite a bit tougher than bone. I hope it doesn't end up being too valuable, otherwise players are going to go to horrible lengths to get their hands on it, and the conservationists are going to come down on Toady for encouraging elephant/hippo/narwhal slaughter.

We already go to horrible lengths to kill <insert endangered animal of choice here>, I doubt making them worth killing would make much of a difference.

In fact, it would probably encourage people to capture and breed them so they could get even more animals, thus increasing the population rather than decreasing it.

regardless, the slime shooter will be completed, come hell or high water, which are both entirely plausible setbacks at this point.

Well, bodyparts grow with age, in the upcoming version, don't they? It takes years for elephants to grow large tusks. 'course, if that extends to other creatures, a whole new trading scam emerges

"This? Just an ordinary white foal? No! It's a unicorn. Horn should be appearing any day now. Of course, the price goes up massively when that happens, but if it'll ease your mind, feel free to wait"

Psychologically Id think most animals would greatly dislike to lose parts that grow back very slowly or never.

Though there are animals out there who have horns that grow back annually.

Magma solves everything.  Flood it with magma then the mud will go away.  And failing that add water afterward, then dig out the obsidian and re-engrave.  Your engravers probably have slightly higher skill now anyway.

Gee, I should read my own tag :)

This is a good suggestion, irregardless of the need to flood my trade depot, and main entrance with magma. I'm a bad dwarf who should have had that system in place already.

Dwarf Fortress is starting to enter some sort of weird location where all these odd technical problems are starting to present themselves and it needs to sort of change but it needs to stay in at the same time.

What specifically makes you say that, Neonivek?

And you pronounce that NE-o-NI-vek or ne-ON-i-VEK?

The thing that confuses me about dorfs is this. Dorf 1 dies in an avalance or somesuch. Dorf 2 is friends with dorf 3 and dorf 1. Dorf 2 berserks because of his friends death and kills dorf 3. also a friend. W. T. F.
Clearly you've never been drunk.

At this point of time I accept either pronounciation. Including the third unlisted one.

Anyhow as for reasons, well the main one now is a huge influx of butchered items. Add in that cooking can only multiply food (I think) and boom, one Elephant feeds your fortress for a year.

And as someone said on that other thread, there will be more hauling than before.

Toady did say in the devlog that he is aware that there are hauling and stacking issues and is willing to cut some of the specialty food stuff until he gets to hauling after this release.

DF is going through a major transition with this release, so things will be ironed out after the release when we look at what needs to be ironed out.

Still, there would be some non-food applications for some of the stuff...... besides magic and using newt eyes and all that.

Ignoring preservation issues, with a small group, is that actually that unrealistic? Elephants are huge. I don't actually know either way, this is more just me thinking out loud.
