Would elephant tusks be useable in spike traps? I guess they would sort of go up and rotate a bit because they are curved.

Id personally would think you would have to turn them into a weapon first.

Once Ivory is an obtainable material, you can probably mod it to be carvable/sharpenable into a weapon by just switching the one tag that makes flint the only sharpenable material in the current V.
(while glass/obsidian should obviously be in the same [SHARP] category, but that has been done to death by now. ;) )

Toady can you replace the word "Skin" with hide when it displays animal coverings?

You have it backwards- Obsidian is presently [SHARP] and flint is not.

[Hacking food amounts.]
Players will just mod it back to the level they want... [anyways, the amount of meat an elephant gives is fine, when compared in relation to the amount of meat you'll be getting from other animals. cats and dogs will probably give less meat then they do now, and cows will probably give more, etc]

You'll also probably have to delete the code when pets can eat again to 'ballance' it out, again.

Grandson of a butcher reporting for useful duty at long last!

Lungs as food are "lights"
The pancreas, as mentioned, is "sweetbread"
The intestines are turned into "tripe"
The brain is usually chopped, preserved in gelatine with the meat from the inside of the skull and sold as "braun"

I'm not sure you can eat the spleen......

Quick question: will butchers collect blood from slaughtered animals?  Then I can have my favourite breakfast - black pudding!  I'd imagine an elephant has a fair few pints inside it.

I don't know about the others, but tripe is made from stomach (generally that of ruminant animals? I know that tripe is pretty much cow stomach), not intestines. Although apparently, in Italy, they use the word "trippa" to refer to a food made from intestines.

A lot of organmeat (especially in this kind of time period) probably was named (and still is) depending on things like how precise about anatomy the people want to get, and what animal it comes from.

It might also be worth mentioning here that the internal organs of different animals vary quite a bit. The "stomachs" of humans, cows, and ducks are quite different and tend to be differently named.

Yep, correct - I was simplifying!  Madness in a DF world of course, I should know better.

There are three types of tripe, from the first three stomachs of a cow, smooth tripe from the first, honeycomb frmo the second (widely considered the best) and leaf from the third.  The fourth stomach isn't used.

The intestines are usually used as the "skins" of sausages, or for similar non-food uses (including prophylactics once upon a time!)

Back to the spleen - it can be eaten, and is called "melts" - not because it has a melt-in-the-mouth texture, but as a corruption of the yiddish "miltz" which is spleen from a kosher butcher.  The reason it's not often sold seperately is because it's often mixed into beef mince because of it's rich red colour.

The largest oddity for me to see on the list was that Nervous Tissue was extracted... I don't know if that is technically possible for that time period, or at least desirable.

That struck me as odd too. As the brain is listed separately, the extracted nervous tissue would basically contain the spinal cord and the peripheral nerves. I think you would need a very skilled butcher indeed to separate the nerves from all the other tissue which they are embedded in. Also I guess the butcher would have to be more than a little odd himself to bother going through the trouble :D

I like to think that the dwarves are trying to keep kosher. You might argue that elephants aren't kosher to begin with, but maybe this particular butcher just wanted to keep in practice.

well, the main hydra test is making sure that it doesn't die from ONE decapitation of (7?). Since he's not got skulls yet, that test isn't ready either.

Try 370 servings of Black Pudding. This is assuming a recipe calling for a liter of blood per serving.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
You have it backwards- Obsidian is presently [SHARP] and flint is not.
Okay. That may be, I've expressly refrained from modding DF.
I was refering to the actual tag that makes it weapon-worthy in the rockcrafter's shop.
edit: duh! Just noticed. you're right. obsidian swords are possible, but flint axes are not.

bloodsausage is disgusting! And I am an adventurous eater. The cloying texture and sweetish taste are not a combination I like. I'd rather drink blood unprocessed.
Most 'delikatessen' are disgusting to most people besides the ones that like it.
Usually it is rotten or raw foodstuff that is considered a rare treat by a select group.
or raw.
