Man, I can't wait for this release! I've been keeping an eye on the project for a year now (finally got round to making my first donation today :D ), and I'm getting really excited about it.

Regarding the future of the fortress, how do you guys think you might incorporate the underground into your fortress designs? I imagine a lot of people would like to build actual houses in some of the more massive caverns. Myself, I was thinking about having a spiral of ramps leading down into a large cavern (with some traps of course), and then an approach to my fortress entrance inside the cavern itself. Nearby rock walls/formations could be hollowed out for archers and siege weapons, etc.

We need a bit of this:

That's very good to hear. Yes, I just had to make a post just to say this :D

At least until your computer heats up from the CPU stress to such an extent that it starts melting into the earth itself.

Dammit, I need to get to testing that reclaim bug with unrevealed tiles and constructions. I remember during a fortress I made that was a massive aboveground construction with a good number of sealed areas that a bug can come up. I wanted to test it, but I also wanted to know if Toady has already addressed it. I just fear without this bug out of the way now Toady might run into trouble with Constructions in caves and the current unreveal plans for these caves.

The basic idea is that when one reclaims inaccessable tiles become hidden again. Tiles generally are only revealed when digging. One cannot dig constructions. Thus building a wall around a tile and reclaiming would render that tile unrevealed forever. This I must test.

Interesting. And then, what about if you sealed a walled-off area within a bubble of farmed obsidian?

actually, can't you just deconstruct the wall, and rediscover it that way?

not if the 'reveal tile' code doesn't get called by deconstruct.

It's not like you can't get rediculously high z-distance in the current version; it just takes a little worldgen know-how to make the mountains taller. For instance, my current fort has a tower over a hundred stories high (the basement takes up about a third of that, though), and a 94-level slaughter drop, and they aren't even the same structure. Some other guy had a map with over 200 z-levels.

I guess it would be nice to be able to extend into the underground more than 15 levels, though. Most of my projects have been aboveground, so I hadn't considered the consequences of removing the downward limit that much.

Removing the limit matters more now that many of the layers will be taken up by cavernous features. It'll probably be important to be able to mine below them, for instance.

The first thing i'm going to do once the new version gets out is modding in a humanoid made of solid adamantine for an adventurer and going on an unstoppable rampage through the underground.

You do realize that because adamantine is so light, it'll just go sproing every time somebody hits you?
