he'd have to specify n! different things. Which is a LOT.

Not quite that bad.  You're having permutations on all those spheres.  You have an arithmetic relationship, not geometric, so it's actually 1+2+3+...+n, which is (n^2+n)/2
Someone already corrected me on this, I was talking about simple pairs of spheres and meant of course n2, not n!   :(

I'll go for it then. Not sure if this has been answered already, if it is, please correct me :p

I've been wondering a bit, will the underground level limit still be 15 levels below the lowest surface point? No need to go into specifics, just a yes/no is enough for me.

There's been quite a while since those pictures of the caverns, but if they still take the same amout of space, that's quite a lot of (metal) ore lost. I suspect my machine CAN handle increase from 6x6 to 8x8 area to get more (metal) ore, but not everyones can.

I would be very much surprised if everything we heard about in the latest DF Talk could fit in only 15 Z-levels. If you haven't listened yet, do so if at all possible! I have tried very hard not to make a "next version will be awesome, can't wait" post, but... So exciting!  ;D

Neonivek and Beardless remember correctly:

Are there going to be additional layers dedicated to this, below the standard 15 Z-levels down? For instance, cave features start at Z-level 16 and go down to 20? And then perhaps layer HFS down a bit further, say Z-levels 21-25? Or are the number of layers and range of these features going to be completely random?

Yeah, the 15 thing is out the window.  For slower machines, it'll probably eventually allow the layers to be drawn in and packed into the same small space you've got now [...]

In dev_now, some of the screenshots are labelled "layer 42" and "layer 107" and so on. Also, I think it was mentioned explicitly somewhere that the cap was gone, but I can't find it. Footkerchief to the rescue?

Classily pre-empted.

Those were probably absolute layers instead of relative ones, as you see in your own fortresses.
