Dwarf Fortress: Now with new SimHell feature!

Seriously though...I now have visions of actual organized Legions of the Damned boiling up out of my deeper tunnels, rather than just random HFS ambushers. And my first warning of it being when the charred remains of Excavation Team 6 come shambling back into the meeting hall with a taste for braaaaainsss....

To answer the question Mandaril asked a long time ago, in the 2D version if you actually mined out any adamantine the game would start a timer of sorts. AFAIK, every month you had a mined-out-adamantine-in-99 chance of the game just... ending. You could not reclaim, and if you went back in adventurer mode there was a very tough demon inside. Also note that, again  AFAIK, you had to go through the glowing pits, which funtioned exactly the same, before you hit adamantine.

Now, what could be "on a much more grand scale" than all of that?

If i were to guess i'd say multi-world tile spanning HFS inhabiting multiple z levels, in large sprawling caverns, with magma flows and bottomless chasms.

edit: oh, and endless, growing attacks

The most epic he can possibly make it is to apply a few V2 arcs

EDIT: Anyways, I still prefer the idea of HFS being something that doesn't outright end your fort, simply one that makes it very, very hard to survive.  With enough trickery, creativity, planning, and sheer dwarvern will, it should be possible to survive demonic incursions indefinitely, perhaps reducing them to "mild nuisance" or even drawing some demented benefit from them.

I do like something so powerful it could take several adventurers and the collective armies of several nations to defeat though.

Well if the mechanics are there.

I can see it now.

Once you breach it and it takes your fort, a Demon civ is created with your fort as its home.Complete with slaved souls and massive armies, it slowly gains power in its new realm. The only way to defeat it with any certainty is to unite the races and drive it back to whence it came.

Sounds fun.

Or just get a couple marksdwarves.

That doesn't exactly work against all enemies.

Only if it's underground.  If it isn't, setting up the required magma and water pumping plumbing takes too long.

That is exactly the wrong answer.  Construction time is never a factor when the project at stake is about causing cave-ins above ground with elaborate lava and water plumbing.

The bigger factors are planning it right and then remembering what the plan was.

Construction time can matter if you have to hit a moving target.

And said target is smart enough avoid standing underneath your gun.

You should have put more thought into your impromptu cave-in weapon.

First, make it earlier.  There's no reason not to have a cave-in prepared as soon as possible.

Two, moving intelligent target?  Make it big enough that it can't miss.
