Crutches... interesting.  Any chance of a dwarf using his/her crutch as a club in a pinch?

Since I'm pretty sure crutches will be an equipped item, using them as clubs will be only natural to the dwarves.

Maybe they could hook a crossbow to it?
No wait, then players would intentionally get all limbs chopped off just to make multi-crossbow freaks. :P

Hehehe.  Plus, if the old crosstraining system were used, we'd be breaking our dwarfs' legs just so they could train up their crutch using for extra strength.

We may be doing this anyway... as a future proofing method... hmmm I've plenty of resources at the moment ... I'll break these 5 dwarfs' legs ... train them up as crutch users, then when they're healed I'll put them into the military ... that way if they get crippled again they'll be ready to go on their crutches faster ... and I might need them.

Given the nature of this community, and the upcoming physical features that distinguish dwarves, I think it's reasonable to expect such things.

There used to be carebears, but after a while butchering kittens, they became Sasquatches. Now they don't really care for anything.

I'm wondering about the other direction:

Will speardwarves who get a wounded foot or leg out on the battlefield be able to hobble around by using their spears as makeshift walking sticks, at least until they are able to hobble their way back to the fortress for a more purpose-built crutch?

I don't know if there is a good enough way of letting the game know an item is usable for that, apart from a special tag. Just relying on "SKILL:SPEAR" isn't good enough, I think, as there might be odd cases where the item in question would be unusable in that way, not to mention that things like halberds and even battleaxes can be used by dwarves as walking sticks.

Perhaps a TEMP_CRUTCH tag for long-hafted or other appropriate weapons; swords, whips and daggers would likely be inappropriate.

nah. More in spirit with the present state of things would be checking itemsize vs creaturesize, shape, and rigidity. A spear would make more a toothpick than a crutch for a (super?)titan, after all, right?
