The new arena mode sounds absolutely awesome!
With the new improved body structures / materials / combat this mode will be infinite fun, even if it is coming in the simplest possible form for now. And a great feature for testing a modded stuff.

Suggestions:
-load/selection menu for saved arenafloorplans and gladiator 'groups'/individuals.
-'Paintable' arena plans.
-'build arena' interface so that working mechanisms etc can be included.
-more than 2 teams.

I would like to see some of these in the future but imho the most awesome feature would be the ability to use one of your saved forts as an arena!
Imagine taking your most epic fortress, with oh-so-perfect defence structures, putting markdwarves on the walls, melee dwarves in the gates, and HUNDREDS of attacking enemies / goblins / monstrers / megabeasts outside, and then watching the epic massacre or taking part in it if you like so.

I assume that the Arena will improve if only because Traps, Intelligent Fortress design, and other aspects will need to be tested as well.

Unfortunately, for most of us this would be "watching the epic massacre _{one frame at a time}".

Especially since some megabeasts include special attacks.

Some people experience slowdown with just one dragon's breath attack.

How much of a resource hog is area mode relative to fortress mode?

I could see arena mode as a nice alternative for people with really crappy laptops/desktops..

...plus it would just be sweet to have a mini-DF experience on hardware that is otherwise incapable.

I don't exactly see how unless Staged fights can somehow replace Dwarf Fortress.

I was talking about an alternative for when your netbook or ancient desktop isn't cutting it. Not something that replaces the DF experience..  just like a travel version or something. The DF essence, if you will.

If you can't play fortress mode because your netbook sucks, anything would be a nice alternative.
