I imagine it's the latter, as the Map Features category (this month's focus) lists "Possibility for unending attacks" as an item.

That being the case... nice.  I wonder if active attacks (as opposed to passive attacks, where creatures just wander around and maybe run into a dwarf and maybe attack him then) will be a tag that we can put on non-entity (non-civ) creatures?  It'd be nice to make it possible to create monsters that aren't just neutral animals, but active aggressors.

Of course, I'm still hoping for a [VENGEFUL] tag in order to bring back the Elephant's old AI, where an attack on one of them will make ALL the rest of them actively hunt you to the last dwarf.  The fall of Boatmurdered.

unto mindlessly assaulting enemies and wildlife:

Scripts for wandering enemies to congregate untill a certain size/number has been reached and then siege (and other tactical situations) will probably be introduced with the "improved sieges" item.

Agressive wildlife and vicious dwellers of misc. features never being hunted to extinction certainly alleviates the boredom felt at some well established fortresses.
Also export of exotic animals will be an option, without breeding.
It certainly is a much requested improvement. 

I wonder if/how the underground caves will interact with the worldgen-fortress topographies/layouts.

Elephants having that kind of behavior is more likely than a lot of people would think, realistically.

You do NOT want to get a family of elephants pissed off at you.

I think 'attack revamp' is Toady bringing back monster waves/attacks similar to the 2D version.  But thats just hear-say for me, I started DF like, a week after 3-D came out.

Rather than having them directly force you to mine adamantine, I would suggest that they give you strange moods that require adamantine. "Dig out the adamantine or Urist here goes insane and dies" is suitably vicious.

(It occurs to me that you can probably get "Lovecraft" as the random name of your fortress. That's when you know you're screwed.)

Remembering a recent epidemic of elephant related mayhem in northern africa: with matriarchs killed, young bulls went on a rampage killing humans and their cattle. Introducing new adult females defused the antisocial behaviour.
...not that that would have anything todo with DF. :/

I just recently took a look at the pictures for the underground caverns.

WOW!

The pic called layer 104, the one with the water maze, looked AWESOME! I would love to build a 'floating' city district right there, digging out some of the stone and laying down floors and walls to make buildings that are connected with bridges. The buildings would extend higher into the layer above and maybe even the roof, bridges linking buildings everywhere!

AWESOME!!!

(no not "shot by a vet", though it seems a possibility with all the drunken navyfolk in Silverdale)

Based on my incredibly accurate predictions, I expect the release to come in October or early November.  This is based on one month per category plus one month to finish the unfinished categories.  Toady, please hurry up!
