Can we please not fill up this topic with pointless pictures? They are harder to ignore then the "material" discussion.

Woo!

Anyhow so Toady hasn't been updating as much lately. Hardly unusual and his constant updates were always more of a treat then something he owed us.

I can only interpret the silence as work on totally awesome secret features.  Since the current HFS was spoiled for me before I even played the game, I'm looking forward to some genuine surprise.

Considering the sheer amount of stuff going in and the possibility of bugs (like carp attack), there's probably going to be things even more dangerous than HFS in the next version.  Which will be great fun to discover.

EDIT: For me, not for my dwarves of course

MyLittlePonyBuiltMyHotRod, this is your first warning. I would like to direct you to read our forum's FAQ and posting guidelines before posting again. Specifically we don't use swear words here, and your picture of Stalin riding a Year3 Limited Edition Starflower inside a German concentration camp was both upsetting and historically inaccurate.

I'm for one looking forward to gradually revealed underground features (as per 2d reveal functionality) and vermin reproducing uncontrollably in my larders.
(All my dwarves will be forced to eiter adopt or eat rats, roaches and r......ribbed maggots?) :)

Vermin reproduction suggestion:
rather than being dependent on just food availability combine reproduction success with being in a 'food place'
unmolested for x time. Traps should have an active attraction to nearby vermin greater than foods in barrels, but not neccesarilly food left in the open or bags. This should be enough to simulate vermin infesting foodstocks without them being undwarfagable.
Vermine tastes of food can vary too: some might prefer rockbush leaves (cattarpillars?) and some may prefer to consume the nuts (squirrels). Rats eat virtually anything, but as history shows nothing is more like heaven to rodents than a granary (i.e. seeds). etc.

p.s. 6 more days... ;)

I'm sure the new color-coded list of to do items has now also become a discouragement...I predict an all-new re-indexed list in a yet-to-be-seen format will be posted soon.

How so? It's easier for Toady to pick a color that he feels best describes the completion of something rather than having to plow through all his notes and producing exact numbers.

Well Toady is unlikely to end the list since he, freekishly unlike a lot of other developers and artists, likes to keep us informed. Then again since his well being is tied into the community I guess that makes sense (though Id like to think that if Toady somehow earned a billion dollars he would still update constantly... you know... after that vacation he would likely take)

Hmm I wonder where Toady would go to if he earned a Billion dollars. I am going to guess Hawaii for little reason other then it is a "Relaxation" vacation.

A billion dollars... He'd need to spend 1 million dollars a year for 1000 years to finish that amount of money. Coinsidering the average lifespan, I'd say the best estimate is maybe 40-50 years left, which places that amount to around 20 million a year.

Generally speaking, the average American middle class suburban spends around one hundred thousand a year (conservative estimate)... this includes all food and luxury expenditures like wide screen televisions as well as regular sports cars.

A vacation in Hawaii for a week usually ranges between $1000 to $50000, depending on the general spending preference. He could live in a five star resort in Hawaii for the rest of his life with a billion dollars and still have lots left over for several generations. Heck, he could buy a resort and live there.

Assuming of course, that he doesn't do the smart thing and invest any money not being used which would essentially quantify the real amount by several billion more.

Hehehehe, it's funny how people seem to underestimate the strength of a billion or a million.

On an average year somebody investing their money with Fidelity can expect to receive an 8% return on their investment. Sometimes more, sometimes less... but it averages out to 8% over the long haul. With such returns a single man living in eastern Nebraska can live quite happily on the proceeds he would get out of one million dollars without even touching the original capital.

In New York City you would need several times that to have the same quality of life and in Silicon Valley you would need a couple dozen times that. Living expenses vary a lot with geography. If Toady were willing to move to Belize, he could maintain a very decent middleclass existence with all the amenities the average American expects on $9600 a year. The only cost is, well, you have to move to effing Belize.

Of course my preferred solution would be for several dozen of the more devoted DF fanatics to form a cult compound to house the sacred Toady.

Haha christ this is a hilarious image.  I'm picturing something like the Luminous Path compound in Deus Ex, with lone genius Tracer Tong in the basement, working tirelessly and doing his best to ignore the fact that he has dozens of murderously loyal gang members at his beck and call.

I get to be the guy who just hangs out at the compound entrance with an auto-shotgun.
