My first post here!

I have to say that this game is superb and awesome! Really good work, keep it up! : D

I have a suggestion for a feature. To be able to make a control room-zone or something where mechanics go and idle when they don't have work to do. This could make it easier to control the levers in critical situations. When you are sieged you need to be able to pull the right levers at the right moment, triggering some trap. All too often I face the problem that the mechanic need to run through half the fortress to get to the lever.

I think better yet, have "rest rooms" like statue gardens and meeting zones have settings for which dwarves are permitted to use them, much like with workshops. So that you could always have your specialist workers keep close to their working position.

Dwarven children kidnapped and incorporated into goblin society might sh... shave.

From the dev log. I cringed at this. Somehow it feels obscene.

For some reason, I agree with you, even though I can only think of one word that fits, and that's not really obscene.
*wonders what the rest of the sentence was...*

Back on topic again:  Toady, what format will the descriptions take?  I'm assuming it will be something similar to the artifact descriptions, is this the case?  Will there be a separate view for the wounds, so that we can see just the descriptions of the injuries, and not the rest of the dwarf?

This is a xDwarf Facex.  It is beginning to show signs of wear.  It is decorated with nose-stubble and encircled with bands of frown lines.  This object menaces with spikes of beard.  On the item is an image of crescents in scar tissue.

Yeah, that would be awesome.

For example, if dwarves were administering some conquered humans, human children born there would adopt beards if they identify with the dwarven civilization as their primary group

O.o
I got this mental image of a pack of dwarves, and this tall scruffy human in the middle, looking like a confused caveman. "We call him bitey"

This beg the question, can elves grow beards?

I dont think toady intended to write a different word, it was just difficult to utter that which is so abhorrent to a dwarf.

Why shouldn't they be able to? If it's not against the concept of the DF elves of course, but only Toady can be sure about that right now.
Anyways...

03/09/2009:
"There's an entity component in the raws and a creature component, so as long as a creature has a group of tissues tagged in a way that is recognized by a civilization, it can interact with that society's style definitions. For example, if dwarves were administering some conquered humans, human children born there would adopt beards if they identify with the dwarven civilization as their primary group (something which will probably be a little too strict now, as there's currently no notion of tribute or conquering that isn't fairly total). Dwarven children kidnapped and incorporated into goblin society might sh... shave."

You keep me amazed Toady...you even care about little details like these. Pure awesomeness. I guess we will spend a lot of time on reading the various descriptions because it will be fun. Just like Legends mode.  8)

If an elf can't grow a beard due to just not having follicles in the right place... perhaps they could look into a falsie: have them strap on a +kitten fur beard+ and pretend it looks natural. And perhaps develop a stoop to try to minimize his or her height.

Would a dwarf in a human civilization wear platform shoes?

Before Tolkien, and then D&D, lots of elfs had beards. They tended to be more "gnomish" too, except for the various Celtic versions--who I'm pretty certain did also have beards.

It all really depends.

In fact, Toady could even have it where False hair, teeth, and beards could become popularised. (I hope so... tough to do though)

Come on admit it. Having Platform shoes suddenly become popular?

As for Elves: It really depends on how Toady is doing Elves. I could easily see them with patches of fur and in fact being MORE hairy then dwarves.
