Perhaps he was referring to WGA preventing you from downloading updates without a valid license.

Greiger's is actually correct...  sadly enough.  The emotional circumstance processor is still turned on, with a randomly rolled up personality, but they can't express themselves or take control...  they can only cry.

Gasp, you mean Microsoft doesn't want to provide support for invalid versions of their software? But how then will people cope with the numerous problems that occur if you try to crack it?

Problems that arise through inexpert cracking frequently pale in comparison to the problems you get by running Windows in the first place.

That is nothing new. Stop scaremongering! :)

....back on topic...

What does Toady mean by 'landed' nobility?

Is it national level as opposed to local political positions?

Something to do with the fact that they traveled over the map, instead of just materializing at your fort?

If it's the traditional sense, then he means nobility that comes with deeds of land. So, that would be something like the count or baron, as opposed to say the hammerer.

Conversely, it might be any noble who isn't assigned to test pilot the noblepult.

Hmm...

Is it possible to give certain castes restrictions on what jobs they can do? I'm thinking of making a civ that has a caste of partially-sentient collectors, and rarer and smarter crafters/nobles/etc, as well as a brainless warrior caste.

Whatever you say....

Anyways, I just ran DF on the new Windows 7 and while it doesn't seem much faster, it does seem to work more smoothly. FPS wise, I think the way I laid out my fort is inefficient pathing wise, somehow. Which is why it doesn't seem to be much faster. At least its not making the CPU usage ram against 100% like before.

The upgrading proccess kept giving me crap about the Trend Micro stuff initially, but I got that dealt with. Now just have to get used to the way it does the task bar stuff.
If you aren't getting more fps why ISN'T it ramming against 100%? Shouldn't it try to in order to reach whatever cap you've set?

Also: You should really just copy the save file for a fort to eliminate extra variables. Knowing how the same fort runs on different configurations pretty much tells you if the computer is running it faster or slower without any room for doubt.

I wasn't really paying attention, maybe I had the game paused or something. It was late at night.

Edit: Just checked just now and its going at high 30s, low 40s in FPS with about 60 CPU usage (seems to average around 60-65). I don't know why it isn't ramming against 100%. Although if anybody knows the answer, that would be great.

if its a dual core it's using 100% of one core, df isnt able to use both cores

Yea, thats makes sense. My comp is dual core. I guess the resource management is better on Windows 7.

Theres also alot going on in my fort atm plus the fact that I have dozens of dogs running loose (I've set some cages to be manufactured, so that will get dealt with soonish) and the fact that I think the way I set up the fort may have made pathing inefficient, not sure.

Edit: Actually, not all that much is going on in the fort, but caging those animals definetly helped.

it is possible to dedicate an entire core to df, to prevent other programs using your precious processing power; i use this Mike Lin's SMP Seesaw, works with vista

I think the download link doesn't like Windows 7 because clicking the one for the normal version takes me to a page with a bunch of gibberish.

Going to take a look at the pro version.

Edit: Figures it won't run on Windows 7, its almost 10 years old.
