I'm freaking out about the modding possibilities here. Can we mod in extracts for other large creatures?

Yes, although they'll all be extracted via the milking job (not by some other "extract the extract" job).

Can we use large creatures in custom reactions?

Nope.  The milking job isn't a reaction.

I seem to recall someone discussing modding fairies to be milkable.

Is the non-emergency-eating of vermin something that's hard-coded for purring maggots only in this upcoming release, or is it something that can be applied to other valuable modded vermin?

Its already possible, all you have to do is make a purring maggot clone on the raws and and change a few superficial features (name, prefstring, etc).

It's not specific to purring maggots at all, and the fix doesn't have to be manually applied to other vermin (it's a code fix, not a raws fix).  In the current version, there's a bug that causes dwarves to happily eat any live vermin they can find.  That's been fixed now.

I was just about to request that source. I have yet to see Toady mention either in this thread or in the devlog that milking large creatures has been implemented.

I doubt that a lot of elemental carbon would exist in magma (it would react or burn off, most likely), and if it did, I'm not sure how you'd get it into the ore sludge without royally screwing up the entire process via contamination.

Mercury, for the record, doesn't require ore to extract from cinnabar because it dissociates easily enough from the compound that all you really have to do is heat it up and tumble/break it a lot.

wat? The mineral cinnabar is mercury sulfide. It's the ore mineral you're digging up when mining mercury.

Some magmas have a fair amount of carbon, particularly primitive magmas or magmas related to a small degree of partial melting such as Mg-rich basalts, basanites etc. This will usually be in the form of CO2 gas though magmatic calcite or dolomite is possible. You probably wouldn't get a great enough concentration for it to work as flux except possibly for really bizarre magmas such as carbonatites. Elemental carbon would be possible if the oxygen fugacity was low enough. Most magmas ahev very low fO2, though generally not low enough to produce graphite. Kimberlite magma is in equilibrium with diamond so it would work.

Your going to make us choose? I'd say military, medical, and undeground overhaul, and the arena mode.

I was thinking arena mode, I always used to make arenas in Age of Empires all those years back. But probably the new underground for my favorite.

oh, come one. you can choose.
rephrase then; which is going to kill the most elves?
Probably medical knowing most DF players.

Correction:  It is now possible to milk cows, donkeys, horses and camels.

Do you have a source for that, or are you just blowing smoke?

It's authoritative.

I don't understand what you mean.
