Perform Hydra Test

Does this have to do with the hydra exploit-ish thing where a single head damaged causes death?

Yes:

Quote from: Toady One
Quote from: Patarak
Does this mean that hydras won't die if you chop off one of their heads?

Looking at the code it seems like they should survive, but I haven't tested it.  The final part of the countdown includes a hydra test, as the hydra was one of the motives behind some of the changes.  But yeah, as people said, bleeding will probably need to be controlled.

From the podcasts, it also seems the hydra test is to make sure a hydra produces the proper amount of heads after dying

And there's things like the hydra problems, like if you chopped off a couple of hydra's heads you would not want seven skulls instead of five; people insist on the five skulls, and I insist on the five skulls so I'm probably not going to put that kind of consideration off

Non-Norwegians or Norwegian-Americans who eat lutefisk? Toady's family sounds great!
Enjoyed with some choice akvavit, I trust?

Failquote.

And yes, but I think that that might come in a future release.

Correct.  It'll probably happen at some point, but regeneration in general isn't going in yet.

Hydras won't be growing back heads, according to Toady.

No he said that they won't be growing back more heads then they lost.

There are soo many uses for Regeneration of bodyparts I can't imagine it never making it into the game.

Yeah, I'm all for regeneration or even regenerating more heads than they lost at some point in a controlled fashion.  It's just not part of the hydra test.

Cool, I didn't know Toady's family is Norwegian, or at least part of it (grandparents maybe?) since 'Adams' is an english name.

Except for the fact that the Norwegians had a tremendous influence on the English language and the English in general, making it very possible that Adams was orignally a Norwegian last name.

Dropping through ice is deadly even without armour on (and probably several layers of woolen undergarments plus fur cloaks as it should be freeeezing when a lake ices over).
I don't see that armour is the critical death factor in that scenario, it won't help though. :P

Will the hydratest-ability to survive otherwise mortal wounds be a characteristic of all creatures with a [regenerates] tag?
(or a seperate tag altogether?)

I can't tell whether you're talking about the upcoming version or other versions to follow, so just to be clear -- regeneration of amputated body parts will not be in the upcoming version.

This was probably joked about earlier...  but I just now realised that Dwarf Fortress is being made by, essentially, the Adams Family. With Scamps as the Thing.

And yes, I know there are two 'd's in 'Addams'.

yes,yes, I can read. :)
What I am angling for is a glimpse of the overarching plan of implementation in future releases.
As you correctly pointed out, regen is not going to be implemented in the current release, yet it could be pre-emptively (?) in the RAWs as an inactive tag for future work to interact with.
One side-effect of regeneration could be the effect of the hydra-test.

Quote from: From the devlog
Scamps enjoyed his mechanical hamster. On the downside is his new run: galloping into my room, shooting under the bed, hitting the wall, leaping on top of the bed, jumping over my head, then back out the door.

Scamps certainly loves to play and run around.

Any chance of having Scamps as a megabeast in the next release? lol, that would be fun.

Well, you don't need to add a tag at all in one of the better ways to fix- just make sure redundant vital organs pick upthe slack properly.

Though, in hydra case, there is that bleeding.
