I think it is the same reason you cannot put a Support over a constructed floor or an upstairs on a constructed floor. Some combination of those

Nooo! Toady's Power supply failed!  We must help him!

So does anybody have a portal device so I can teleport to Toady's place and replace the power supply?  Thats the kinda thing I'm in school for after all.

*looks around*

Anyone?

Not only that...
" I'm now 14 hours, a new computer, 4 linux installs, 3 XP installs, 2 bluescreens, 3 shopping trips and a bad product return into the journey."
OUCH! I always hated to install OS because it takes a lot of time, considering that you must install all drivers, utilites/programs, games etc. also.
Now Toady had to install XP 3 times + linux 4 times! He must be annoyed...  :-X

Maybe people should start sending Toady External Drives so he can keep backups.

He's already said he makes regular backups and keeps them in multiple locations.  An external hard drive isn't a great way of backing things up anyway.

He is probably refering to how some of them burn out or something.

Well, one thing should be very important: quality. Always buy decent external HDDs, but those are not cheap.
Example: 500GB Velocity2 Redundant Backup System. Price: 400$.

typical ones that go into USB enclosuers (a great majority of all external HDDs) cant't report any kind of SMART data and are of typically worse quality than standalone drives.

Tape or Archival quality DVDs (gold reflective layer) are the only solution for backups  8)
and RAID for regular computing (be it hardware or Linux MD devices)

Well it doesn't matter what he gets as long as it is a place he can keep his Dwarf Fortress Data (and notes) outside of his computer... and be reused

Yeah those are good indeed, but for backups? That's pointless...like I've said, quality external HDDs and/or 2x standard HDDs should be perfectly enough. Anyways, we went off-topic again, let's get back on the right track. We can make a separate, HW related topic anytime. ;)

1. Even good ones fail.
2. Multiple offsite backups are the minimum for data that your livelihood is tied up in.

This is nonsense. Care to explain? You must have lot of experience with external HDDs.  :P

I certainly don't have any experience with the legendary everlasting hard drive, though I have plenty with the other kind.  The multiple offsite backups thing is really the main reason though.

VIP data protection is as followed:

-On your pc, twice and a thirth time archived.
-On two different usb pen-drives, stored in two different locations, not in the same house in combination with the possibility of burning everything down.
-On the internet, encrypted with a password so that only you can access (or someone with a LOT of extra time.
-On an external HDD, preferably a Raid 1 type, so that if one disk dies, the data is stored on another.

There are more... dark methods of data protection, but I will not speak of those here.  :D
