I think it has something to do with potential energy.

Can a candle melt an iceberg before the candle runs out of wax.  Or in this case, can the magmaman run out of magma before the wooden sword runs out of wood, the answer is obviously the magma man will win.

Unless it is a very nice candle... err I mean Sword!

Obviously the sword is made out of some sort of self-cooling wood like Maple or Oak

Also because your wooden sword will instantly combust, with the portion that got stuck into the magmaman turning to ashes and you endinig up with whatever is left.

You'd be better off with iron or steel.

What metal has the best heat dispersal?

I think this is it:

We have our answer!

Sodium isn't a metal...

Not to mention that it reacts violently with water (or is that potassium), and is half of what makes salt.

Edit: Look here http://www.webelements.com/ its in the same column as hydrogen, the pink group are the transition metals.

You should look at Aluminum, that one is the highest heat capacity of the real metals.

I never said make a sodium sword.  Dumping a bag of sodium of a magma man would really disperse his heat.

What, sodium is a metal!

An alkali metal!

I want sodium in DF!

Not to kill magma men, but to mix with water!

You still said metals....

Edit: Yea I looked at an alkalai metal, but we're thinking of different concepts of metal here....

Well yeah, if you want...

Heat, you get aluminum.  The best stuff.
Conductor, you get silver?  I think that's the one, I know gold is the second best conductor.

Because it is a metal, it would just be really hard to forge a sword out of naturally.

We're talking about how to kill magmamen here, not vampires Electricmen!

I doubt dwarves would consider Sodium a metal, however.  The Alkali ones are really different.

Doesn't really matter since they wouldn't know what sodium is, being unable to isolate it and all.

Your best heat conductor is going to be molecularly perfect diamond.
Just make a diamond sword and no amount of magman will melt it, either.
Melting point of 4030ºc (7280ºf)!

I think a wooden sword could freeze a magman...If it was pre-chilled to absolute zero and was a significant fraction of the size of the magman.  But this is impractical--and not even dwarfily impractical.  For that, I have some idea of a magman-killing metal sword tethered to a dwarf powered heat pump and kept frigidly cold.

edit:  note, using a diamond sword may have unfortunate/awesome consequences.  Diamond can, under certain circumstances, burn/explode
