Adamantine in Dwarf Fortress however has an impossibly fine edge along with being incredably hard.

Does that mean improperly stored adamantine blades slice into the ground to the handle?

Sounds more like 24th century technology to me when described that way. If they had an edge that was as thin as a single atom (which would be as far as you can get before you're dealing with protons, neutrons, and photons of various wavelengths), then yea they could do that.

When we get to that level of technology, forget blades and enter traps made of a mesh of monofilament wires made from a chain of molecules (and bonded by some force, I'm not well versed in that kind of tech, although I've seen variations of it in various sci-fi books) which would basically make cubes out of anything blundering into it.

Adamantine is supposed to be a mythical, magical material...
Going back to the dragon discussion their bones could be made of adamantine. Like a certain killer species of dragon to end your fortress when it lasts for over a decade.  Would help with the whole flying thing because adamantine is really light weigh, I think.

Adamantine has the density of air, possibly less.  It's just that despite this density, it's a solid not a gas, stronger than carbon-nano tubes, and harder than diamond.

So yeah, INCREDIBLY light.

and yet dwarves can only lug a single wafer

He he he.  Yeah, it almost looks done...  alas...  those who are in your teens, hold on until your twenties...  those in your twenties, your thirties...  others, cling to life as you are able...
It should be pretty fun though.

A Wafer where a single loose string could take their heads off.

Frankly I wouldn't want to be anywhere near that stuff.

Yeah, in this case, I support being able to carry only one wafer.  You'd want to be DEADLY careful with the stuff.

EDIT: I just checked, and it seems that in its solid form, adamantine is definitely lighter than air, although somewhat denser than helium.  Still-- why doesn't it float?

Interesting that adamantine is denser when liquid.

There are two things you can be certain of : death and taxes. You can be even more certain when the bringer of both is a demon-killing dragon.

Toady, please keep on posting such AWESOME updates in the log ! :D

These stories are awesome! Legends mode is going to so much fun to read. And, even better, if Toady does put in the ability to dump it out to a file we can write parsers to pull out cool stuff like this, or make web pages that hyper-link everything.

In any case, I love the new megabeast behavior and survivability!

Name one other substance that is denser when liquid. :)

Still, yea, it is wierd that it just doesn't float into the air.

I imagine admantine as a mythical material that allow you to shape it mentally.  So instead of depending purely on dwarf's physical ability to forge it, it also takes it shape from what the dwarf THING it should be.  So, if a dwarf thing "Really sharp thing", admantine becomes a really sharp thing.

One of the toads decided to go for a swim in the moat - presumably because he could path through the moat to my dwarves. He is not charging in, just loitering in the moat.

The toad is having a nice relaxing swim.
The goblin mounted on his back, however, is drowning.

I'm just saying that the property of it being denser as a liquid than a solid may seem strange until you realize that an everyday substance already does it. Then that property doesn't seem quite so strange.

The fact that it has properties usually attributed to a gas when its a solid is the strange part.

Its gaseous form must be stranger still....
