The talk about cyclops' using spears relates to something I've been wondering about, namely with underground creatures now using equipment again, will above ground creatures like animal men, ogres, gnomes etc also use equipment?

Yeah, it's like CobaltKobold said:

Toady what are the future plans for the Beastmen in the sense of a social/civilisation structure if I am allowed to ask? Will they be Civilised or as an "Intelligent" creature will they automatically be drawn to form societies?

These change quite a bit.  We want the aboveground Animal Peoples more or less aligned with regional spirits and uneasily with elves when they are in contact, but the underground Animal Peoples are more insane and antisocial and also use crude weapons where the aboveground ones might not.  Ideally the intelligent creatures will be able to form structures for their societies themselves -- it's a difficult problem though, so we're going to start that experiment with the goblins, who will not have any pre-defined entity positions.

So it sounds like the aboveground animal peoples won't change much yet.

Well except they may have societies. Which is different from their current state of being animals...

I feel like I made a pun. I feel so dirty

Though I completely forgot about that "Pre-defined entity possitions" aspect.

Okay, that pun made me realize I'm unsure how "state" is being used in "state of nature."

Another awesome scholarly pun.

And adventurers sure behave like SON people...or so I read.

I don't normally comment in here, but I've got to say, the human settlement with it's tame giant eagles and jaguars sounds awesome.

I look forward to the havok that airborne enemies will cause for my fortress.

As a side note, I really do like Toady's writing style - it's got a great humor to it. "However, this was not to be -- because I forced a human assault on my fortress with a debug command."

We're dead if we annoy the elves now. If humans only have a slight ability to tame animals, and he has a personal guard all with giant eagles, I think elves will have successfully tamed the unicarpelefirecrossbowman. Awesome update, though, this is the type of story that makes the devlog so fun to read.

Well, I guess pathing for flyers got a bit more important.  If a squad of elite eagle-riders can just drop in over your walls, it would certainly spice things up a bit.  I wonder if it's possible to get lucky enough with the human civ generation that they'll actually be willing to trade you trained eagles or whatever?

Oh...awesome! I love updates like this!

Hmm...this just opened up some great new modding possibilities.

And since it wasn't green: Is pathfinding for flying invaders improved with the new version? In the current version my invaders on flying mounts just sort of sit in the air doing nothing forever.

Can we keep that debug command in? :P

The level of autonomy this game is beginning to develop here is astounding.
