Or maybe.. Artifact Lobotomy needles that steal the soul of those you use them on!

What if moody doctors tried turning melancholy or stark raving mad dwarves back into their normal state?

Would be quite a useful skill to have during tantrum spirals.

Which also possibly means, alot more blood for the blood god!

Seriously though, combat is going to get bloodier now that there will be descriptions of that blood, among other things.

@Ark: You need a psychologist for that, not a surgeon. Interesting idea though.

Or to go back to One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest again, they'd be more likely turning berserk dwarves into sedate dwarves. It'd lessen the tragedy of a lost brother or wife or whatever, because you don't have to kill them! I don't know how you'd subdue a berserk dwarf.. Fortress guard in white coats tie up the offending crazy and bring him to a medical table while the doctor pulls out his needles and jams them into said dwarf's eyesockets..

Well, I think lobotomies are probably way out of scope.

Trepanning is not the same as a lobotomy. Trepanning was probably used (and still is actually) to release pressure in the brain from skull trauma. Sometimes it may have been used for ritual purposes or something.

Really though, neurosurgery as we know it began in the 19th century when it began to be recognized as a profession.

If a light grey brain wound is equivalent to a really bad concussion, then maybe they can use trepannation to try and treat it? As for spinal wounds, I wouldn't expect them to be able to do much of anything. For dwarves with yellow to red spinal wounds could be given wheelchairs or something if they have a lower spine wound, any higher than that and they probably should be written off.

A related question though, does a neck wound count as a neuroligical wound ingame? There's a difference between just getting your neck all scratched up vs hurting the spinal cord.

Neck? It counts, IIRC. They don't heal.

Dwarfs with spinal wounds could be carried around by kids or small animals.

"Ok. Bill MuffinQuilts you have 3 options.   Option A is we design a small chair for you.  It will have wheels on it.  We strap you in and you can roll around.  Then...you heard of sled dogs right? like they use up north?  Ok, good imagine it like that, only instead of a team of sled dogs we'll strap you to 200 lemmings.  That'll put the little buggers to use. And it has the bonus of the lemmings eventually jumping off the pit of doom the stairway goes around and taking you with them.  You probably won't live very long with this setup, but at least the folks in the dining room will be entertained as you fall past attached to the little rodents screaming.

Option B is we stick you in with crazy Dr. Joe.  He's been screaming about how he needs a patient for a week now, I'm sure whatever he wants to do wouldn't be too horrible.  He already grabbed some fire imp leather and pitchblende.  Of course the manager mixed up whether it was a fey mood or a fell mood, but it's win win for the fortress either way.

And of course option C is we lock you in the 'critical care ward' and I pull this lever.  Nobody ever comes back from that...but ya know it might just be because it's so awesome in there they don't wanna leave."

This made me check the raws preview and it turns out NERVOUS is still a property of the spine body part, not the tissue.  I wonder if that was intentional.  Those are 8 months old now, though, so who knows.

Will there be neurosurgery?

Well, Toady said he hoped to get peg legs and other prosthetics in.
At least with the brain, there's already an item ready for use, so he wouldn't have to add another.

Urist McBraindamaged has been ecstatic lately. He had his brain replaced with a +felsite mechanism+ lately. He dribbled down his shirt lately. He talked to a child recently. He admired a fine ceiling lately.
